Hi,
Just switched from a 2013 MacPro to the below PC.
Using Adobe 2022 and 2021 I'm getting dropped frames in the source window when playing back media. It's usually around 28 dropped frames. We did not have this issue with the previous Mac.
I've turned off Audio Input. Media in source window stutters when the media is located on the NMVE SSD or the network storage drive we use (connected via Fibre).
The media is HD AVC-Intra 100 MXF media. The dropped frames does not appear to be an issue with ProRes 422 HQ media.

I'd also add AVC-Intra 100 is dropping frames in the program monitor/timeline playback.

Hey Michael,
Sorry. Can you check out the new version (22.3)? Check your Creative Cloud app for the new version. It should be there; if not, then soon. I hope that will work better for you. Let me know.
Thanks,
Kevin

Hi,
Thanks for the response. I am currently running 22.3.0 build 121.
I'd add that Davinci Resolve on the same system has no issues in terms of playing back any media I'm throwing at it.
This would indicate it's not a hardware issue?

Fully uninstalling the Nvidia driver back to base driver appears to solve the issue - Under renderer 'Software Only' is defaulted and greyed out.
When the driver is installed even selected 'Software Only' does not fix the issue. I'm assuming as the Threadripper has no integrated GPU it ignores this and still leans on the driver.
We, however cannot have a system without a GPU driver installed. Any idea's why Premiere is not liking a brand new A5000 GPU?

@Kevin-Monahan
Hi Kevin,
Any updates from Adobe on this long lamented issue?
I had to help another editor today turn off SMT on a Threadripper Edit Workstation due to performance issues with AVCintra media.
I'm hearing that Adobe is getting close with a fix in the v24.4 beta with imporoved AVCintra and mask performance, but there is an issue with exporting. Can you confirm this?

HI @Media Mogul,
I am on personal leave at the moment and the team is at NAB. I will respond to you once I return to the office. Sorry for the delay.
Thanks,
Kevin

Actually yes. Adobe confirmed the issue with me and my team on a video call.
They assigned engineers to fix it and applied that fix in the 24.4 Beta version.
I've tested that Beta release and it has indeed fixed the issue for SMT on threadrippers (I haven't confirmed personnaly if it solved it for high core count Macs as well, but I believe it has)
If you have access to the beta release from 24.4 or 24.5 then try that and see if it is working for you as well.
Fingers crossed it's stable and comes to a public release soon.

AVCintra was introduced by Panasonic in 2007.
It's still the requested program delivery codec for many networks including the BBC.
High core count Threadripper CPU's were introduced in 2017.
This forum thread was started 2 years ago.
Premiere is supposed to be a professional NLE.
Threadripper CPU's are frequently recommended for High end Premiere Pro Workstations, including by Puget Systems. The 'other' NLE's don't have this problem with high core count CPU's crippling a codec. Frankly it's embarrasing.
Wouldn't want them to be in a hurry to fix it or anything.

We had to return our £8,000 Threadripper PC because of this issue. No amount of tweaking SMT ever truly got rid of the issue. I cannot believe this is only now being fixed - All the top PC vendors selling Threadrippers are advertising them as Premiere Pro Workstations.

Hello Adobe? Any help?

Which driver were you using?
I've got a 3960X 24 core/128GB of RAM and 2080Ti. Another user with Xavc issues sent me a clip, was slick on my rig. So ... what is the issue here I wonder?

Hi,
512.59 - I've tried the driver below that with the same result. Premiere is very laggy - when I press play with AVC-Intra 100 it has to think about it for a second then plays. About every fourth or so clip loaded starts dropping frames from 2 frames all the way up to 30+ frames.
The Ryzen 9 PC I also have with A5000 does not have this issue. Very Odd.

Truly. These things can be so frustrating.

Disabling SMT via Process Lasso for Premiere Pro appears to correct the issue. Is this because Premiere isn't optimized yet for AMD SMT?

We ran into the same issue at work when we switched to the exact same PC Build.
After some investigation, and the tip in this thread to check if SMT was causing it, we discovered that any system we had which had over 32 logical processes (threads) would have issues playing back AVC-Intra media. The more discrete media files on the timeline in quick succession the worse it got.
By comparison an older low core/thread count CPU could playback the same sequence without a hitch.
My results for AVC-Intra 100 media timelines with a few clips
(no clip effects, just clips in a row on timeline):
Intel system 24 Cores 48 Threads - DROPPED FRAMES
AMD Threadripper 32 cores 64 Threads - DROPPED FRAMES
AMD Ryzen 9 with 16 cores 32 threads - NORMAL PLAYBACK
Turn off Hyperthreading/SMT:
Intel system 24 Cores 24 Threads - NORMAL PLAYBACK
AMD Threadripper 32 cores 32 Threads - NORMAL PLAYBACK
Of note: I had a meeting with the Adobe Enterprise customer service rep and demonstrated the problem. It's been put in front of the Adobe Engineers, but I'm not sure on when we will see a fix for this.

BTW: I tested this on these versions of Premiere, which all exhibit this high thread count issue with AVC-Intra 100:
23.3
23.2
23.1
23.0
And
22.6.4
22.6.3
22.6.2
22.2

Thanks for posting the above.
We ended up returning the AMD Threadripper as we use AVC-Intra 100 quite often and couldn't have the system dropping frames. I do remember trying to turn off SMT but found there wasn't an official way to do this with the Threadripper as with the Ryzen processors.
I tried using Process Lasso to do this, which did reduce the amount of dropped frames from the high of double digits. However, the system would still drop around 5/6 frames with AVC-Intra 100 codecs.
Davinci Resolve would not drop frames on the same system, so it appears to be an Adobe issue. Very surprised they still haven't sorted this. There are lots of systems with the Threadripper out there being sold as 'Editing PC Systems'. Ours was from Scan - 3XS.
