I am having the worst time using Premiere Pro CS6. The program is constantly crashing, saying it has encountered a serious error and has to close. This is happening during the most basic operations like scrubbing the timeline or pressing play. I am using footage strait from my Canon 7D (h.264) with no effects or filters. I have all the latest updates to the software and my computer. No other programs are open during these errors. I'm using a 2011 MacBook Pro i7 8GB RAM with AMD Radeon HD 6750M 1024 MB and OSX 10.7.4.
I wanted this to be an alternative to FCP 7, but so far it is not working out.
Any ideas?

I am getting this a lot too. "Serious Error." It wasn't happening on 6.0, but a few things changed since then so I don't know what to blame it on.
I am on a MacPro 4,1 32GB RAM GTX285. Running 6.0.1 and 10.7.4, latest Nvidia drivers.
I thought it was a Dynamic Link problem, but it is happening on all sequences now. (Although when it happens on a DL, it will bring down AE as well) Tried trashing all preview and cache files. Happens on H.264 footage and ProRes footage.
It happens a lot on scrubbing, but also playback. I notice sometimes that the program and source monitor will stop functioning right before the Serious Error happens.
I am now testing with a lot of startup items and other drivers disabled to see if there is a cultprit. So far so good, but i have thought that before. I will report any progress.
What apps/drivers are you running in the background on your system? I am testing right now with the following disabled:
Hazel
Text Expander
iTunes controller
Wacom tablet driver
Dropbox
Growl
Scansnap
Pathfinder
Launchbar
Chronosync
Drobo

Forget it - still crashing with all the background processes gone.

Just a general response here. I have two Mac Computers with loads of RAM and power, both crashing every time I use Premiere Pro CS6 with the latest updates. I am only using DV footage so it should be easy to use. Has problems even trying to capture from my editing deck(JVC-BR600UA and it is fully cleaned and set up): one has to go back and forth with the play and record buttons before it actually caputres anything. And while editing or viewing footage that is finally captured, it will crash...no effects, no power-hogging reasons...just crashing. Reminds me of when I used Premiere back in the 90's with a Media 100 card and a very expensive RAID system...very buggy. When Final Cut Pro came out, I switched over and couldn't believe how wonderful it was. When it met it's death after Final Cut Studio 3 and all the raves about how much better Adobe Creative Suite has gotten, I bought into the Cloud and got the whole shabang. What a sucker I was. I have people asking me which editing software they should get for their Macs and I will tell them this: stay away from Adobe. They can't even handle DV...how are they going to handle HD? It is junk and they must hire the cheapest of labor to wrtie the programs. Reading what others have written about using their programs leads me to believe there will probably be a class-action suit against Adobe.
Hey, iMovie blows the doors off their stuff and it's free.

JohnnyGuitar1, sorry you're having troubles, but without any specifics, it's impossible to diagnose the issues you're seeing.
Saying PPro crashes "all the time" doesn't help; specific steps to reproduce the behavior, might.
PPro can certainly handle DV, Arri, R3D, and 4k workflows, without issue, as many professional users can attest.
I'm glad iMovie works for your productions.

Does it crash when opening a new project?

No. It usually crashes after I've been working for a few minutes. Sometimes it will last over 30 minutes, and other times it will take less than 5.

Seems like we'll need more information on what you're doing; which specific action(s) on your part lead to the crash.

Seems like a hard one to describe, because it is so random. I could say "just editing" but that isn't helpful.
I am testing right now with the firewall off. Could a firewall issue lead to a "Serious Error?"
If it still happens, I will test some more with MPE off.

Could it? Depends on what you're trying to do across the network. Yes, more testing/specifics would definitely help us, help you.

I agree. I feel like it's crashing doing the most basic editing tasks. I haven't even really been able to get deep into an edit, because of these problems. ( I keep having to go back to FCP 7 to finish a job).
An example would be:
I lay some interview footage on a timeline to look for sound bites and while I'm watching the footage, the program crashes. Or, if I'm scrubbing through the time line to look for something specific the program crashes.

It's the same for me it has crashed twice now after a couple of minutes of working on it and I have 16GB tam new macbook. Where is the problem?

I traced the problem to the fact that I forgot to copy the HDV clips from the USB drive to the internal SATA drive. After I did that, there were no further crashes. Apparently Premiere cannot open files that are on USB drives.

If I had to guess, this has all the earmarks of a display driver issue. Assuming that you're running in Mercury GPU mode, here's the list of things you want to check:
If that doesn't sort it out, then we'll need more info. Does this only happen with GPU accelerated mode enabled? Also, mac crash logs are always helpful.
Here's a link on how to find mac crash logs:

Will,
I went through the checklist above, and was up to date on everything. Still issues. Then, I downgraded to 6.0, and am still having lots of problems which may/may not be related. Getting some crashes (Serious Error), and now a new issue where the program and source will only show black during playback, but show current frame on pause. Once this happens, I have to restart. It will bring down both AE and Pr. There are dynamic links in the timeline with Warp Stabilizer. One possible culprit - a few times I have been running stable, and then after starting Safari, I will go back to Pr and get the Black Frame issue. Can you think of any conflicts with Safari?
Thanks!

I don't see how Safari could be implicated. The black during playback definitely adds to my theory about it being somehow related to display drivers. Did you get anywhere with the GPU mode disabled? Any chance of procuring another graphics card to test with in case the card is taking a dive..?
Also, could you PM me one of the crash logs?
Cheers

Wil,
Thanks for reminding me of trying it with GPU off. So, it looks like it won't crash when it is doing the black playback, so no log there. (but I will look for the crash logs from earlier with the serious error crashes) But, if I switch over to Software Only mode, everything returns to normal. Switch back to GPU, and it is black again. Seems like it is getting narrowed down.
As said before, I am on 10.7.4, latest CUDA driver, latest nVidia driver for the GTX285.
I don't have access to another card easily, but would follow that road if everything is ruled out.
Thanks for your help. Is there anything else to try right away?

Hi Wil,
I am getting constant crashes when I try to initiate a capture in Premiere 6.0.5. I'm on a MBP, 10.7.5, Radeon driver 01.00.573.
I'm capturing from a Canon HV30. The system doesn't seem to generating log reports from these crashes.
Any advice would be aprreciated!
Thanks,
Geoffrey

Happening to me too. Constant "serious error" crashes, usually when I'm doing hardly anything at all. One project was working with just a couple images and it was particuarly awful. Like you, H264 footage are a common thread.
I'm a Mac Pro 3,1 2x2.8GHz Quad-Core, 10.7.3 (will try updating), 8GB RAM, GTX285, 6.0.1 and CUDA 4.2.7. GPU Driver Version says 7.18.11 270.05.20f02.
As it stands I can't get anything done. My experience w/ CS6 so far has been to finish one project (2 tracks of DV, one of H264) that was originally started in CS5, and I don't really remember having any problems. Software worked much better than CS5 actually. Tried another one from scratch, same setup, but I encountered the H264 media pending bug that's been reported elsewhere and had to give up, go back to CS5. Project I mentioned above, I could barely do anything w/o the program crashing. This fourth project, another 2 DV/1 H264, I haven't encountered any problems playing back the footage yet, but this is when the software because very unstable.
My console is FULL of "invalid drawable" errors

I've been seeing less "Serious Error" messages (or maybe none, I can't even remember at this point because it was happening so much) since I rolled back to 6.0. But I am still having lots of crashes, hangs, and dynamic link problems with AE. Are you guys having issues with sometimes only seeing black during playback? Wil has been troubleshooting some graphics driver issues which I am wondering is contributing to the "Serious Error" problem, or is unrelated. Trying to find a common thread...

Yes. I occasionally have that problem. Sometimes instead of seeing black it just holds on a still frame while playing. Both of those issues are usually followed by a crash. This definitely isn't the only time it crashes though. Most of the time everything appears to be working fine, before it crashes.

I'm actually running AMD Radeon HD 6750M 1024 MB (a recommended card). I'm actually scared this is going to jinx me if I say it, but I turned off the accelerated GPU and haven't crashed in the last 45min ( a new record).
