ProRes 422 "Not supported Format" in CC 2019, on a Mac? Can't downgrade CC beyond one Version?

I'm trying to finish a long neglected Doc project, that has a considerable amount of HDV tape footage that was captured to ProRes 422 back in the day in FCP7.

Impressivly, the CC 2015 project imports into CC2019 fine, however when recconecting, the quicktime files don't even show up via Media Browser, and when I force a recconection via the finder, I get an error that the file type is not supported.

Screen Shot 2020-01-30 at 2.31.58 PM.png

I'm shocked becuase acording to Adobe, ProRes is still supported.

To complicate matters, It seems that Adobe CC has changed thier policy, and individual subscibers can no longer downgade to all previous releases ( even back fo CS6)

They even pulled the direct DL links made shared on this site

I'm looking into transcoding using a friend's installer of CS6, but I may have to install an dual boot OS in order to run the damn thing.

Not exacly the wind in the sails I need to finaly get this beast of a project off my back!

Any advice?

Larry Jordan thinks I should contat Adobe Support by phone, and I guess I'm putting that off (I've got kids in tow at the moment and posting here is more feasable). I'll call and report back

Kind of a tough situation, SquareEyez. I think you've found that "old" ProRes files are problematic. That is because these are 32 bit files that are simply no longer supported by macOS.

For years, Adobe has been preparing for this moment by creating 64 bit versions of the ProRes codecs. For a time, all the way up to CC2017, you could import a 32 bit ProRes or H.264 file and export the same file at 64 bit. I spent a lot of time and drive space to transcode my video library a couple of years ago. I advised everyone else facing these issues to do so, as well. I am so sorry you did not anticipate this problem.

With no way to download CC2017 again (the loss of access to older versions as another thing that could not be anticipated), it makes the problem you are facing even harder. We can't even recommend the use of older software.

You need to find some software or service where you can start transcoding your 32 bit files into 64 bit ones. Have you checked out Compressor? Mr. Jordan says that it works in his testing, using Mojave or earlier versions of macOS. Catalina will not work with these files whatsoever. I do not have the software, but his article makes it sound like a viable option. Worth checking out the trial version, I think.

Let us know if you need assistance in getting your project back online.

Kevin

Thank you Kevin for your time.

I've tried some more tests, and am quite confounded by them.

The odd thing is that these files play perfectly on the Mac OS ( the screen shot above is taken from  QT playback, on a MBP with High Seira)

I've uploaded a small cip to my drive here, to test at a facility I work at, that has switched to PCs ( and has an old legacy Mac in hibernation for such emergencies).

I'm shocked that I can actually preview these files on a PC, and import them into Premiere 2020 running on a PC.
They are perfectly fine.

When I get home I'll test these out again on my MBP, and post results and screenshots.

Thanks again,

David

As Kevin noted, this is a Mac issue, as Apple chose to "deprecate" the 32-bit ProRes files ... so newer Mac OS's will not play them. Which is why he was suggested transcoding them in some computer/application that can still work with them. Such as the PC you noted you could play them on.

These changes by the OS desiginers can be a bit problematic for us users.

Thank you @R_Neil_Haugen & @Kevin_Monahan both.

I'm at a loss here as I've now just updated my OS and CC, and I'm still looking at the same problem  - the system, and Quicktime Player can read the ProRes.mov files, and Adobe cant. The screen shots bellow tell that anyong story.

Here is a link to a 20 meg clip of color bars that will play on Windows 10 PCs at work running CC2020, as well as a legacy Mac we have, but not on my MBP now running 10.14.6 and CC2020

Ive just transcoded a few samples I had brougt in to work into a few flavors of codecs, and am assuming that I'll have to transcode hundreds of source clips on new drive and relink. That or buy a new personal edit box.

Seems like it must be a niche problem, but its HELLA frustrating to be caught in the middle of a jurisdictional battle between Apple and Adobe, while using an industry standard Capture Codec.

Thanks

SOLVED: No file extensions on the Quicktime Files. Somehow this had happened back in 2008, and was never a problem until a newer release of Premier. Ran 1000 files through Name Mangler and now they Media Encoder/Premiere can see them. I'm hoping that I can get them to reconect...

Thank you for your help @R_Neil_Haugen & @Kevin_Monahan,

Hi David,

So you added ".mov" to the naming of these files, or something else? I just want to fully understand.

Thanks,
Kevin

LATEST

Yup. just added ".mov" and it worked.

Explains why the files worked in finder/quicktime player, and not premeire.

I had migrated from FCP7 to Premeire back in... 2011 or somthing, working on a Mac, and had never had an issue with these files in the past. So the missing extension issue went right over my head. I'm just glad I don't need to wrangle transcodes.

Thanks,

D
