Soooo... I tried out smart rendering today, transcoding a 25 minute movie from my Canon M50 into ProRes 422 HQ, generating previews in Premiere, editing and exporting (leaving it in ProRes 422 HQ) like a dream, and wound up with a **41 GB file**! Unless friends are coming over to watch the movie on my laptop (a la 1980's projector parties), this is almost useless. YouTube will take about 4 years to upload this, so I feel like I must be missing something: there has to be SOME format which I can transcode to, generate previews, and smart render to which generates a more manageable ~1 GB (25 minutes) 1080p file for youtube. Sigh. Thanks for bearing with the mild rant! Thoughts?

That is an exellent choice for making a high-quality master export, which I would suggest you do while having the "reimport into project" option checked.
Now ... to make deliverables ... a different step of the video-post processing process, export from that master file into whatever deliverable file you need ... often an H.264/265. And the export will go fairly quickly.

Dear Norvells,
You can delete that large ProRes file after you have delivered all your H.264 copies as an FYI.
Cheers,
