Still Photos and Playback Speed

I changed the default time for still photos on my timeline but when I play back my time line it still has th same rate of play or does not extend the time when it comes to stills.  Does the rate change only when the project is rendered or do I just don't understand how rate of playback works when it comes to various media or in a multi media project.

you have to change that setting for still duration when you start project and before adding any stills to the timeline.
