Suddenly can't import video clips to premiere pro

Hi Everybody.

I'm a fairly experienced Premiere Pro user and have made dozens of videos, no problem. Since the upgrade to the new exporter in premiere a week ago, I'm having trouble dragging and dropping video clips into the timeline. The audio imports, but the video does not. Has anyone else had this problem? What is going on?

- I've toggled on the video tracks, so that's not the problem

- Vids I'm importing play fine outside the timeline

- an initial vid will import, but subsequent ones won't.

Thank you anyone who can offer some help!

Simple ... you don't have the Source target set for video ... note the far-left blue block that says A1?

You need a video track above it set in blue also. So click on the gray block for V1 there.

as at the current time, Pr thinks you're telling it you only want audio, no video.

The most common user error is not source patching the track.
Solved by first opening clip in Source Monitor. Then drag/insert into timeline.

AH! Thank you so much, Ann. I have never had to do that before and always just drag and drop to the timeline without opening in source monitor.

I think the upgrade changed the basic settings somewhere and I didn't know that pp was previously helping me with this without my knowledge.

Really appreciate your reply!

No, the upgrade did not change any setting.

This behavior has been around for many moons.

Hi again Ann,

I just wanted to add that I could see the first video on the timeline, even though as you can see in the screenshot, the V1 was toggled on. The second video would not load in the same spot in the timeline after the first video, which I could still see. Not sure why I would see one and not the other?

Thanks for your comments - much appreciated.

To tg

he far left of the Timeline Panel is the control section, showing V1 and A1 and track types and all.

The very far left has some blocks that if you click turn blue. Two sets, the left ones are Source targets, for bringing clips to specific tracks on the sequence. The right one is Track target for working within the Timeline.

If say there's a blue Source block set for an audio track but no video target set, you only get audio added to the Timeline.

Or vice versa.

Why? Because it's a HUGE benefit to editing fast ... being able to direct where the app is putting things. Which is why most users love the feature.

Removing it would generate the most massive howls imaginable  ...

Hi again Neil,

I just want to add one strange thing: I understand about the V1 being toggled on to view the video, but I can actually see the first video on the timeline, wheras a second video dragged to the same track does not show.

Is this something that should happen normally?

thanks for any insights you might be able to offer.

That is designed behavior. When you bring the first clip to a timeline panel, Pr uses that to 'set' the sequence settings.

Any additional media in an insert/overwrite or drag/drop from a bin or the Source monitor will only go to the sequence when there is a Source target set. And it takes both audio and video Source targets.
