Restore MKV Format Support

Removing MKV Format support has a negative impact on the workflow of people that work with broadcasting software like OBS. Restore MKV support. Having native support for MKVs, even if they don't edit well without generating proxies, saves me a ton of time that I'd otherwise have to spend remuxing/transcoding files.

Hi all,

MKV support is actively being worked on. I don't have a release date to share currently but when that changes, I will update this message.

Regards,

Fergus

@Clint W.  I'm sorry that this is taking longer than we'd expected. Your core scenario is exactly how we also think of this: that Premiere Pro should be a Swiss Army knife when it comes to formats supports. While it is no excuse, I will say that this work involved entirely rewriting our MKV support and not just restoring what was already there.

Regards,

Fergus

P.S. While we fully intend for MKV support to be delivered by Adobe and to be first class, it has always been possible for anyone to

i'm not going to sift through 12 pages of comments to see if someone else said this, but i have this same problem. And until the team supports mkv format again (which they should!) here's a very fast workaround using the free VLC software:

1. Media>Convert/Save
2. + Add (add the mkv file)
3. Convert/Save
4. Click the wrench
5. On the Video codec tab, select "Video" and "Keep original video track"
6. On the Audio codec tab, select "Audio" and "Keep original audio track"
7. Save
8. Browse
9. Choose a destination and give it a .mp4 filename
10. Start

Quick and painless. Converts it to an mp4. But we shouldn't have to go through this. If free software can do it, this expensive software handle mkv files with no conversion.

Insane. My subscription lapsed for a period between jobs. Now that I'm back, they've removed MKV support and years of source material is now useless. What the eff?

I still use MKV on the daily. It's a free and open source container too. Why can it not be supported? It's not even a codec, just a container.

The lack of support of MKV is a real let down considering I've paid thousands of dollars to use this software.

I'd like to see support for MKV files. You don't realize the time spent that costs companies because it isn't available. Think..

...at least a source format, to prep files for use in Premiere. I currently have to use a ffmpeg-based app to rewrap or transcode to a MP4 file for Premiere to use this type of media.

it will make life easier if you will allow using MKV files
or at least allow to convert them through the Premiere Pro without the need to look for a converter

Further to my comment below, and after a few weeks of working with remuxed mkv files.. you can remux in OBS and VLC, and i've tried both. The file will import into Premiere Pro, but it doesn't behave well. You can't scrub the timeline gracefully, and if you try to position other graphics on the screen in higher layers, as soon as you touch the x/y settings in the Effect Controls panel, the graphic instantly shoots off the screen and disappears. i now have to keep punching in values in the x/y fields to position my supers. 😕

Not sure where critical mass is for Adobe to respond to a feature request, but looks like 372 votes ain't it.

A lot of tools create Matroska files. And it is a standard in many professional archives around the world. Those are good enough reasons to support the container format. Some flunky at Adobe didn't know these facts and thought, "Let's remove this weird boutique format." Wrong-o!

Still waiting for MKV to be supported. It just doesn't make sense to remove support for it. Did they ever give us a reason WHY it was removed? OBS recommends that we record on mkv -_-

My guess is the trend towards increased adoption of adobe premier in professional editing (movie production etc) means a tradeoff in decreased support for features which are geared more towards hobbyists.

I am a bit surprised since the market for small scale video creators is at least large enough to produce millions in revenue for Google..

"Lack of demand" used to be the excuse Adobe's spokespeople gave when explaining why the Matroska container wasn't supported.
When the supoort was - silently - added they received a lot pf praise - and presumably got more subscribers.
The people who made the decision clearly don't want to explain themselves. Most likely because they have a really bad case. There are reasons for this decision that they simply don't want to reveal.

wow, can't believe support for .mkv was dropped. Once again, not understanding the market...
While OBS can record in several different formats, .MKV IS THE DEFAULT FORMAT FOR OBS

Premiere Pro 2020 really sucks ***.
Choppy playback + laggy menus on my beast of a custom rendering machine. Plus no mkv support?
Good thing I still have a backup of 2019. Thoroughly disappointed.
