Are you using more than one monitor?  I have seen reports of that getting confused with some Mac systems. Have you adjusted screen scaling in the operating system?  That will definitely cause the workspace position to change.   Things to try: Select the Essentials Workspace and then Reset Essentials. The car is available on Adobe 3D assets, By @davescm   Thanks for that Dave.  It's something I have not thought to use before now.  I'll ask YouTube for help on applying materials with Substance, but can I worry you for some help if I get stuck?   I have been using SketchFab to grab 2D screen shots of 3D models. Hi Stefanie.  Jane was asking what the original size of the leaf image was in pixels.  That's what counts here. If you are only increasing it to 800 pixels wide, then it sounds like the original must have been tiny.   So the question becomes do you absolutely have to use that image, or could you find another?   Where did the image come from? If from someone else, ask them to send it again at full resolution. If you found it with Google, then click on Tools > Size and choose Large   If you absolutely have to use that image, then if you paste it to this thread at its full resolution, I have an Ai upscaler plugin that will double its size.  Using it on your downsized screen shot gave it some problems, and I suspect it has lost a lot of the edge detail.  I'm guessing either Sycamore or London Plane, but it is a huge guess with so little detail to judge from.   ... This is a guess without seeing the document and layers panel, but one thing that can happen is that the beginning and end of text layers can be cut off.  I asked Nigel French about that issue many years ago, and his fix was to add a space or two to the start and end of the problem type layer.   If you have merged all the layers, then you are probably exporting to a raster image file and losing the benefit of using a PDF file.    There is also the question of what preset you are using?   High Quality Print is safest, and the best option unless file size is crucial. Turning off Preserve Photoshop Editing Capabilities will reduce file size, but if you do that and later save as a .psd, make sure that Layers is still checked.  I've fallen foul of that gotcha once, but the default is for it to stay checked now.  It's always safer to check though.       ... I think I have notices some shortcuts being less reliable just lately. I wonder if instead of using Remove Background,  if I chose Select and Mask, and then used the Quick Selection Tool to select the graffiti,   By @Barton5C39   It's supposed to be exactly the same algorithm, but the Object Selection tool did a slightly better job for me as well.   I tried both methods several more times, and got slightly different results each time with Remove Background doing the better job as often as Object Selection tool plus mask.   The fairly new Quick Actions appear to do the same thing as an Action, so you could create an action that applied Object Select and add a layer mask.  Trigger it with a function key and you have an instant workflow.   Original   You mentioned selecting the central area before removing the background.  I do the same thing if I think the layer is too busy for Photoshop to have a fair chance.  It keeps surprising me lately though.  You've go to love Ai driven functions, even if you don't agree with Ai generated imagery. ... I have 64GB on my current and previous systems, and I chose to stay with 64GB on my current system because Photoshop never came close to maxing out its allocated memory.  What I do see is exactly what Dag @D Fosse talks about with Scratch drives.   Right now I have a 720P video animation and a blank file I use for screen shots for forum answers.     Opening another 2GB project that I changed to 32bit That's out of 45GB of allocated memory.   That's 26GB of scratch space that has to be writen to and read possibly every time I use a function, and it chose to do that rather than use more of the available memory.  M.2 NVMe drives are lightning fast nowadays, but you are missing out on significant Photoshop performance if you choose to go cheap.     BTW  Photoshop is not great at giving up system resources, even if you used Edite Purge.   OK, I see I have fallen foul of something I like to remind people about.  I've closed Photoshop and have an ophaned 4.2GB scratch file left on the drive from a week ago, so Photoshop did not shut down properly that day, and left the scratch file behind.  It's good practice to check the root directory of your primary scratch drive periodically for ophaned Photoshop Temp files, and delete them. ... Your situation is significantly less defined than the example I used, and therefore more complex.  Remove Background still does a surprisingly good result, but misses the darker background bottom left.   The trick with difficult selections is to start with the best tool for that situation, and output to a Layer Mask.  That gives you the facility to improve the selection using other tools.   I'm not so sure now I take a closer look. It's hard to tell because of the marching ants on your screen shot.  The idea is to make a closed path around the problem area , and fill with black with the mask selected, but my best guess now is that Remove Background did a better job than I first thought. Another trick is to temporarily boost contrast to help with the selection, but your image is so flat it is not not working well, and Remove Background is so incredibly good now, it will usually work better without any interference.  It would be interesting to see a screen shot without any selections in place. ... @davescm, have you been able to reverse the tilt/no tilt behaviour?  I can only show full size with the pen vertical, and minimum with it tilted.  A pencil would use its tip when near vertical, and produce a larger softer stroke when tilted.   ... View more

I'd been playing with this for an hour or so before I asked about the charcoal_KA pencil brush, so well over two hours in total.  That includes watching the video you linked to of Ramon Miranda' amazing sketch of actress Jean Simmons using Krita. A lot of that time was with the brush engine, which so far seems more complex than Photoshop's   So far I have not been able to create a Photoshop preset that comes close to Krita's CVharcoal_KA.  Presets that I thought might cut it suddenly leave me embarrassed to compare, and that includes several pencil sketch preset ideas I found on YouTube.   About the closest I have come is starting with this preset from the Dry Media group from the Default brushes.     As it comes it has no control of opacity, and looks like this regardless. Changing size jitter to tilt has minimal effect with wither of my Wacom pens, but setting Flow Jitter to pen pressure got me to here.  It still doesn't feel as nice to use as the Krita Charcoal_KA preset though, and my gut tells me might never match it. This is the Krita stroke.  It's opacity remains constant whereas all of the Photoshop pencil brush ideas I found have a regular dark/light/dark/light pattern.  The Krita stroke is definitely smoother.  I don't know if we have been any help at all, but it has been an interesting learning experience for me.  I was using an Intous 5 Touch for the above, but I have an XenceLabs Pen Display that I'll plug in later to see if it works any better.   Please let us know how you get on with this, and share any presets or settings that work for you. It's always better to start a new thread in your situation. That way we would know what operating system you were using from the thread tags, and we'd have a clue as to which Photoshop version?    So what operating system and version are you using? What Photoshop version? Reference to the last post from last year, what do your brush settings look like?   Is this happening with all brush presets and tools that use the same cursor(s)? When did it start, and does it tie in with something changing?  You mentioned an update.  Which one.   Dispite you finding this old thread, this is not a frequent issue.  You are the first person I have seen reporting it in the 16 years I have been doing this.  It might, just possibly, be a corrupted settings file, and solved with a Preference reset, but my guess is that something is broken.  Either with Photoshop or your operating system.   If you open Photoshop and go Help > System Info > Copy and paste to this thread, that will tell us what you are using. If you have the beta version installed, then we can get an idea whether this is an OS or Photoshop issue.     ... View more
