AAAhhh!!! You got it !!! Thank you !!! (sorry iIcould not respond sooner...I had to be out most of the day.) Overprint preview was not turned on in the "dull" blue file. As soon as I turned it on I got the vivid blue. Please see the attached 2 images - when Overprint Preview is turned on I loose the paragrapgh sumbols. Is there w ay of having both vivid blue and paragraph symbols ?

I am using a 2023 MacBook Pro. I have 2 InDesign files (separate chapters of a book) with the same subheading paragraph style in which the font color is set to "Blue." The intensity of the blue is very different between the 2 files - see attached. Once I noticed the difference, I slightly renamed the style that showed as brighter blue and imported it into the the other file. It too showed as the dull shade of blue. I cannot figure out why this is happening. Thanks in advance for any assistance.

Please refer to attached image. InDesign finds the next instance of 'Stages' but clicking the 'Change' button does not effect the change. I quit InDesign and restarted but to no effect. Thanks in advance for any assistance.

Thanks James, I tried this but when I got to the enlargement in the Median blur operation i could see that the dot pattern is such that even a slight twitch of the blur sider throws the whole thing into black. I fiddled a lot but keep getting the moiré pattern in all cases. I own the copy of the magazine - the image is of my maternal grandfather at a western outpost of the Royal Northwest Mounted Police, later the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) in 1904. The magazine itself has no great value to me so I am going to simply cut out the image and frame it.

This morning I scanned a photo, taken in 1904, I found in a magazine that shows a relative. The image size in the magazine is 4x3 and it is very grainy. I understood that I was not going to get a crisp image but scanned at 1200 dpi to get what I could. When I scanned it, on an HP Laserjet Pro MFP 4301dw, I did not notice that the Preset setting was "Document" which yielded a PDF - see 01.jpeg attached (jpeg because I photographed it on my computer screen using my cell phone, as is the case for all 3 attached images). I placed the pdf in an InDesign document and printed it using the HP Laserjet Pro MFP 4301dw; it was dark as I expected - see cell phone image 02.jpeg. I then rescanned at 1200 dpi with Preset "Photo" which produced a jpeg and, on screen, a somewhat better image - see cell phone image 03.jpeg attached. I then imported both 01 and 02 into Photoshop and modified the brightness/contrast. However, when I went to print the modified images out of InDesign they came out with an odd pattern. - the same pattern as described below re 04.jpeg. I then removed the images modified in Photoshop from the InDesign document and replaced them with the original pdf and jpeg - and again got the odd pattern shown in cell phone image 04.jpeg. Could someone explain what is happening With thanks in advance.

I then wondered about Bob's comment below so: I opened the Master on which the frames are placed; I selected each frame and set the fitting option as per Screenshot 06; and, I got Screenshot 07. That works but it leaves me wondering why bother then with selecting a "Crop to:" option when placing the PDF?

Hi Barb !! Page 1 and 2 have same paper size and margins. Page 2 preview also shows "Bounding Box (All Layers)" when that option is selected for page 1, and also shows "Crop" when that is the page 1 option.

I am using Command D on a new MacBook Pro to select a 2 page PDF for placement in a document. I cannot get the placed pages to automatically crop or fit to the bounding boxes: I set the cropping option as per Screenshot 01; I get the result shown in Screenshot 02; I then changed the cropping setting as per Screenshot 03; the 1st page fits but the 2nd does not. I have tried the other available options for cropping but none of them work either. Is it possibel to get an automatic crop/fit? (why offer cropping options if they do not work?)

About 3 hours ago I posted an InDesign "How to" question. I cannot find it in the posted list of questions and answers in Discussions although I can find it if I search my user name, Michael J B, and check the lsit of my posts. Why can I not see it in Discussions...and determine if there have been any responses ? With thanks in advance.

Some time ago I began a document which: has a layout (named in the attached images as "Letter V") that is 7.5"w x 9.5"h. The layout dimension related to certain vision issues I had at the time and the size of the monitor availble; multiple chapters each of which are separate files. I was planning on combining the files eventually but this layout size allowed me, given my vision issue, to see a "whole" page at once and to easily navigate between chapters (files). Recently I got a new and much larger monitor and I now want to work on standard 8.5"w x 11"h page size. I have began the process by creating a new layout, labled "Custom 240320.00," as per Screenshot 01 attached. I imported some text from an original file in the Letter V layout. I find that, not surprisingly, it adds paragraph and character styles under "Custom 240320.00." These are duplicates of the styles already present in paragraph and character styles panes, see Screenshot 02. Is there a way in which I can designate all of the paragraph and character styles in Letter V layout as the full range of paragraph and character styles available in Custom 240320.00 layout so that when I bring in text from files using Letter V layout it does not enter them again, this time under Custom 240320.00? Rephrased, I want to have a new Template file that has page size set as 8.5"w x 11"h but includes all of the paragraph and character styles used in the Letter V layout. How do I do this? Also, I notice that the the two layouts shown in Screenshot 01 follow one after the other when I scroll down in the work window - see Screenshot 03...Letter V has 43 pages which preceed the pages in Custom 240320.00. Once the paragraph and character styles issue is resolved, how do I get rid of the Letter V pages? Thanks in advance.

I am using a new MacBook Air. I wish to save as a PDF a blog posting that I received in my email. To do so: > I select print - my printer is an HP Color Lasetjet Pro MFP 4301dw; > in the Print window I select: PDF > Save as PDF; > I select: Print and saved to an appropriate folder. The bottom line of text on each page is cut in half horizontally...i.e., the top half of the letters appear on the page in question and the bottom half appear at the top of the next page. Then: > I opened the printer settings and, under Paper Handling, selected: Scale to Fit Paper Size, see attached; > in the Print window I select: PDF > Save as PDF; > I select: Print and saved to an appropriate folder. The problem was "fixed" on about 1/2 of the pages byt remains on the rest. How can I fully eliminate the problem ? Thanks in advance.

Ah, you got it, Thanks !! I had not got around to opening the character styles palette...the case that was causing me the problem was not showing "none" as character style but had an incorrect c. style applied. Oddly, I have found that a few other p. styles do not have their correct c. style, which should be "none", but have somehow ended up with the same c. style being applied as in the case I was citing. Thanks again !!

For years I have used InDesign on a much upgraded MacPro. Last week I changed to a new MacBook Air. Today I started to use InDesign on the new computer but encountered a glitch: see Screenshot 01, I have a paragraph, that references some research material, which is showing as having a red font; see Screenshot 02, the name of the paragraph style is: "Body Text | Blue || no spacing or indents"; the text is supposed to be color blue; see Screenshot 03, in Paragraph Style Options the Character Color is indeed set to blue. Why is it showing as red ? I tried selecting a different color and then selecting blue again but it still comes up as red. Thanks in advance for assistance.

I have a new document with 5 pages. I put page number text boxes on the Master 2-page spread. The page number shows on pages 1, 4 and 5, but not on 2 or 3. There are no boxes of any kind obscuring the page number location on any of the pages. I have the layer with the page number text boxes at the top of the layer stack. I could not find any online assistance with this. Thanks in advance for assistance.

I have paragraph styles for various border options. One of them has a border at top only - it functions as expected everywhere except in one file. Attached images are as follows: • Screen Shot 01: Border settings; • Screen Shot 02: Preview view mode showing a double border line rather than the expected single line; • Screen Shot 03: Normal view mode showing a double border line rather than the expected single line. What is causing the double line ? Thanks in advance.

A number of years ago I created a simple bar graph in InDesign. I have decided to use it as the basis for a new but similar graph. In order to apply the swatch color in the new graph I need to be able to determine the which swatch I had selected previously - my list of color swatches is extensive because it has een built up over years. I selected the graphic box in the old file that contains one of the colors I want to use but cannot find any info indicating exactly which swatch I selected - i.e., the color does not highlight in the swatches list, or show the CMYK numbers. For various reasons I do not want to copy paste the graphics boxes from the old file into the new file. Is there a way to determine the CMYK numbers ? Thanks in advance.

Hi Peter, thanks again. I ran some further tests and have located the source of the problem, although I do not kow why it causes the problem: • Screen Shot 07: I checked for effects on page 3 - none; • Screen Shot 08: there was a graphics box to the left of page 2 - no effects; • Screen Shot 09: I deleted the graphics box with the map, and the "highlight" colour immediately reverted to the desired saturation; • Screen Shot 10: I returned the graphics box but deleted the map from it, and saturation was as desired. What is it about the map image that would cause the saturation shift ?

Hi Peter, I was not aware of transparency blend space. • Yes, transparency blend space is set to CYMK for the document and the colour swatch used for the character style is RGB. • I checked for transparency but found none as per Screen Shot 03 (where the saturation on screen of the blue is as I wish it to be on document page 5), and Screen Shot 04 (where the same character style swatch colour shows as much more muted on document page 2); • I checked document page 1 and the blue has the desired saturation there - see Screen Shot 6; • I then placed the cursor at the start of the paragraph on page 2 beginning with "In Myths to Live By..." (where the blue shows as muted) and pressed the return button until it was moved to page 4 where the blue is now the desired saturation - see Screen Shot 05; So, in summary: - on document pages 1, 4, 5 (and the rest of the document pages) the blue used for the "highlighting" character style has the desired saturation; - the blue only goes muted on pages 2 and 3. Which means something is different about them but I do not see what.

I have a paragraph style for body text in my document. The default text is black. I have a character style for use with body text which has the character style set to blue - for use in highlighting text that will need editing at a later date. The blue is fairly saturated so that it pops out on-screen for quick recognition - see Screen Shot 01. For some reason, in some locations, the blue shows as much more muted - see Screen Shot 02 (same file, paragraph style and character style). This does not seem related to the monitor - moving the page up/down and right/left on-screen makes no difference. How do I correct this ? Thanks in advance.
