Hi there, I was given an InDeisgn file, a 3 page spread (front cover, spine, back cover) and it had guides set up on the edges on the spine page. I noticed when I adjusted the width of the spine, the guide lines automatically adjusted to the width I set. I didnt know this was possible. Does anyone know how to achieve this? Thanks!

Hi everyone, Is there a way to tell what figure styles are available to a certain font on fonts.adobe.com without activating the font? Also, I had question about the figure styles in InDesign. I assume the parenthesis around the style means it is not available for that particular font? This is Basic Sans and nothing happens when I switch between the different styles. If I change the font to Arial then it takes the parenthesis off and the styles do actually effect the font. I was trying to use Tabular Lining with Basic Sans but I'm thinking its not possible.

Hi everyone, I was just curious as to why this photo in a PDF gives me a reading PPI of 296x278 PPI in Illustrator vs 300x300 PPI when I view it using the object inspector in Acrobat. As you can see it is placed in a clipping mask (I have it selected with the direct selection tool) and the photo was rotated--I assume that has something to do with it. My understanding is that you are not descreasing the size of the photo, just cropping it with clipping mask...so I would think the effective resolution would not change and it would read the same in both programs. If someone could enlighten me, I would greatly appreciate it!

Just tried that and it still gives the error. Its not a big deal, as like I said in my initial post, changing the pantone off of overprint in the PDF fixed the error. I was just curious more than anything (and for future reference) as to why I got it in the first place. There isn't anything unusual or obvious about the InDesign file from what I can tell that would be causing it.

Hi Eugene, Thanks for the reply! I reallt appreciate it. Yeah I know opening a PDF in Illustrator is not the best option but I had to make some other adjustments to it and it was provided by a client. Unfortunately at my job, I'm not in a position to push back on getting a packaged file or anything like that...I'm lucky to get a PDF most the time haha. Anyway, back to the odd issue at hand....I did some more testing myself and I do not get the preflight error if I create a new InDesign document--very odd. I don't know what it is about the particular InDesign document that is causing preflight to give the error--I can't figure it out. I've attached the InDesign file and PDF in question.

Hello all, I've got an interesting one here...I was getting a preflight error about white overprint to a linked PDF file...Everything looked fine with overprint preview on in InDesign and also I have "discard white overprint in output" selected in Illustrator so there should not have been any white set to overprint by the time I was working with the file in InDesign. It turns out there was a color logo set to overprint in the PDF and that was causing the error. However, the color was PMS 305--which is like an eggshell blue color. Once I deselected overprint on the logo, it fixed the error in InDesign. Do you think this is some sort of glitch? I can't figure out why the preflight would give a white overprint error in such a scenario...another odd thing is that the logo didn't look to be overprinting either even though it was set to overprint in Illustrator. It was set on a dark blue background and looked just the same.

Hmm yeah that makes sense...you'd think they would just not export anything there though in that case. They show up because a person checks "Crop Marks" on the export settings. I think they should either be the same size as the other marks or not show up at all. The fact that it does, actually makes it more of a pain for me. The printer I use, actually prefers marks on the spine and they want them the same size/distance from the trim as the corner crops. I think it would make more sense to have them be exported at the same size/distance as the corner marks than the way they do now. If you're printing cover spreads--you would know not to trim the spine. Thanks for the replies! EDIT You'd think in 2020, there'd be a fold mark option for spreads in InDesign.

Hi Randy, Thanks for the reply! Right, I get that they're folding lines...I just dont see why they are getting exported at a different size/distance than the other marks. It doesn't make sense to me that when InDesign places the marks on the spine--they come out shorter than the outisde marks.

Hi everyone, I have this issue where if I have a cover spread set up in InDesign as 3 facing pages...the crop marks for the spine always get exported shorter than the crop marks on the outside. You can see they sit off of the trim more than the outer crop marks. I'm not manually placing these crop marks--they are being set in the export settings of the PDF. I can't figure it out for the life of me. I've attached some screenshots. Any help would be appreciated!

Hi everyone, I've always wondered why printers are so adament about black/grey text being only comprised of K. I mean I completely understand the reasoning behind it (registration) but do the same perils not apply to colored text? For example, green text.

I have an InDesign that has several photos linked together and it won't let me ungroup them. The option is grayed out. I thought maybe they were pasted from Illustrator or something but if you hover over them in the links panel--they all say that they are all linked back to the links folder. I can't say I've ever come across this before.

Yeah in my experience you really can't reproduce Pantone colors in CMYK very well. You can in the ballpark but it never really matches. We don't guarantee exact color matching where I work so its not a huge deal. Even if you are printing using Pantone ink, you can get quite the gamut depending on how many copies you are printing, etc...It seems you all have confirmed my beliefs that color matching is a big bag of no fun.

Hi, yes this printer wants the colors converted to CMYK before they get them (and that has been my experience with most printers). I've always just used Pantone's recommended break down and it usually works out fine. I just wanted to see if anyone has any other practices or methods of converting.

Hi all, What is the best practice for a scenario where a customer provides a file that is built with a Pantone color but needs to be converted to CMYK? For example, PANTONE 7548 C. Would using the recommended CMYK breakdown on their website yield the best results? Thanks!

Hi everyone, I've got a conundrum here and I've got a theory about whats going on but I'm looking for some other input here. I have this PDF that was originally created in InDesign. The background is an image and when I select it in Illustrator it tells me it has a pantone fill on it. I can't change the fill in Illustrator--I get an error(see attached screenshot). If I unembed the image, it lets me save it as a PSD and when I open the PSD--the image is grayscale. I'm curious as to if anyone has any idea on how the original fill/color overlay was created?

Hi all, My rectangle tool is acting odd. As you can see in the picture, whenever I make a rectangle it is not completely filling the space and putting these odd stroke/lines on the end. Any ideas?

Hi lambiloon! Thanks for the reply. For privacy reasons--I cannot post the file. But it's exactly like how I posted originally. Yellow background, white rectangle, and black text. Nothing fancy, all blending modes set to normal in Illustrator. Nothing set to overprint. The issue is that the white rectangle disappears when the overprint preview settings in Acrobat are set to "Always" and "Automatic". However, it looks fine when I set the overprint settings to "Only for PDF/X Files". I can't figure out why and I'm also looking for some documentation of the different overprint preview settings in Acrobat.

Hi all, I tried posting this in the Acrobat forum but I could not find the start new discussion on the Acrobat homepage. It's not there for me, unless it is hidden well . So I'm hoping to get some help here. My issue is that I have this PDF. It's got a yellow background and on it is a white rectangle with some black text on it. The white rectangle is NOT set to overprint...however when I open the PDF with my acrobat overprint preview settings set to "Always" the white rectangle vanishes. The black text stays. Same for when I set it to "Automatic". However, if I set my overprint preview settings to "Only For PDF/X Files" the graphic looks fine--white rectangle is there. I am not sure why this happening--does anyone have any ideas? Also I cannot find any documentation on the different settings such as "Automatic", "Always", etc....I'm curious what the exact differences between them are. Is there any documentation out there? Thanks!
