Beta 27.9 cannot be set as default in Win II

I use both 27.8.0 PS and the Beta 27.9 and have attempted to set the Beta as default for CR3 and several other file formats. It will not allow me to set it as the default and always returns to the non-beta version.

I am doing this through the windows default app tools. The beta does not even display under the default applications and I have to use the link “Choose an app on your PC” to find the Beta. I make the selection, prompt for use as default and the update will not work.

    Hi @march411

Thank you for reporting this and I can shed some light on what you're experiencing.

Starting with a recent Beta update, we made an intentional change to how Photoshop Beta registers itself with Windows for file associations. Previously, every time Photoshop Beta was installed or updated, it would automatically take over file associations (PSD, CR3, TIFF, JPG, etc.) from the stable version of Photoshop — which many users found disruptive. To fix that, we removed Beta's automatic file type registrations on Windows.

This is why Photoshop Beta no longer appears in the Windows Default Apps list and why you need to use "Choose an app on your PC" to find it manually.

That said, you should still be able to manually set Beta as your default if you choose to — and the fact that your selection isn't sticking is not expected behavior. We're looking into that as a separate issue.

In the meantime, if you need to open specific files in Beta, you can:

    • Right-click the file → Open with → Choose another app → browse to the Beta executable
    • Or drag and drop files directly onto the Photoshop Beta icon or window

We appreciate you taking the time to report this and apologize for the inconvenience. We'll follow up once we have more information on the persistence issue.

    Thanks,

    Cory - Photoshop Product Manager

Hello @CShubert, thanks for the response.

I running Win 11 Home version 25H2 - I run the Beta version almost exclusively unless I double click an image without PS running. There is the problem, some file associations will not work.

I’ve attempted to move mostly to Beta 27.10.0 and all my application update automatically through Creative Cloud.

First the Beta version doesn’t appear in the popup dialog box, you have to use the link Choose an app on your PC. I go to the Adobe directory and select the Beta version. It will not associate with the format, CR3 will not, CR2 will associate but it states it associated to Adobe Photoshop 2025, I don’t even have that version loaded on my system.

I’m using the standard method for file association -  Setting, Apps, default apps, Photos, select the extension and then the application. Beta doesn’t stick, it defaults back to 27.8.0.

Currently I can get DNG and CR2 (don’t use) to stick. I can’t get CR3, JPG, JPEG and Tiff to stick and again I have to dig to find the Beta in the Adobe directory and if it sticks it shows Adobe Photoshop 2025. Image below
