P: Completely broken Hand tool (PS24.5) Hand Tool Sticking, sticky, not seeing mouse-up

This is a bug. Please don't move it to the Discussions tab.

And please don't merge into another unrelated thread. I will report a bug with this thread.

------------------------------------

I made a YouTube video using a keyboard mouse overlay to show what action I'm taking. I hope you can refer to refer to it.

https://youtu.be/Cle6dEgP5_Y

------------------------------------

I was disappointed that there were so many bugs that were not fixed in 24.5, but I was still trying to give it a shot.

However, this bug is pretty serious. Really...

Please see the video I attached.
If you watch the video, you will see that I am shaking the screen.
I'm not using a hand tool, it should release automatically, but that thing is sticky.

To release this sticky, pinned handtool, you'll need to make one more unconditional click.

Here's how I've organized them for your reference.

< What I can be sure of >

  1. Window10 (Tested a total of 14 PCs)
  2. Use WacomTablet
  3. Not related to preferences at all (Especially not related to Spring loaded, Flick panning stuff things)
  4. I've tried all the known Photoshop troubleshooting methods and no improvement.
  5. Even reinstalling Windows does the same thing
  6. Only in 24.5 does this bug occur with certainty. I can't reproduce it at all in earlier versions.

I'm not sure about the >

  1. Mac OS not tested
  2. I couldn't even test if it was a GPU company difference. I and my team all use NVIDIA

And while there are a few threads pointing this out, there doesn't seem to be a proper plan to fix it.

If this is not fixed in 24.6, 24.6 will be equally unusable as 24.5.

I also experience this problem with the sticky hand tool when initiated with the space bar, and it seems to happen when I mouse down, then move the mouse and release the mouse **while the mouse is in motion**.  If I fully stop the mouse pointer before releasing the mouse button, then the hand tool does not get stuck.  But if I release the button while the pointer is in motion (like a "flick" gesture), then hand tool scrolling gets stuck, as if the mouse up even never occurred.

I do not have Flick Panning enabled, but it seems like it's getting confused because it's a flick-like mouse movement that causes the hand tool to get stuck.

Something just occurred to me. I'm not sure where you are located. But would it be possible for you or other Adobe employees to personally visit some people that are having this issue? You say you are having trouble reproducing it. Test some machines in the real world?

So... Adobe...

Any more excuses, why not finding and fixing this bug?

If so many users can easily reproduce this bug, you should be able too.

If this ONE pc you use for testing, doesn't bring you any further, get more PCs. Should be in your budget!

@CJButler We have artists in four different countries in my day-job company - England, America, India and the Netherlands. We have an installed user base of around 47 clients overall and this bug is easy to reproduce on every client (we did a quick check a week or so ago). Win10x64, no tablets, no user modifications - just vanilla installation via Creative Cloud. This is in v25.0.0 but it was also in v24.7.1, v24.7, and v24.6. If we downgrade to v24.5 the problem goes away. It affects the hand tool for panning (hold space, click left mouse, drag the canvas, let go of space, let go of left mouse, and the mouse still drags the canvas). It does seem to be speed-relate. If you very slowly and deliberately perform those actions, it only does it 50% of the time. If you work at "normal" speed, it does it 100% of the time.

It also applies to the marquee tool - left-click and hold, drag a rectangle, let go of the left mouse button and it's still dragging the rectangular selection. In this case it's not speed-related and can be reproduced 100% of the time. Both started in v24.6, neither present in v24.5. I'd be looking in the check-in notices for v24.6 to start investigating what got checked in that affected either the left-mouse click or space bar function.

@Fych  Nope. This is reproduced even in environments where there is no WACOM without touching puserconfig. Reinstalling Windows OS and simply installing Photoshop will reproduce.
It is not an issue related to plug-ins or user settings.

I confirm, I have the same bug. I get this bug on 54 different PCs (every PC has different specification). I have possibility to access to such many computers and I've tested new Photoshop over one moth moving from one to another computer. Bug was reproduced on every machine. Every computer has nVidia grapchics card (models from gtx1060 to rtx4080) and Intel CPU (models from last ten years). Only Windows is the same and this is version 10 with latest updates.

Nobody in my office does.

I'm starting to wonder if this bug affect only people who use the PSUserConfig.txt file to fix pen pressure, I know I do

@CJButler  Thanks for the update! Like others here I'm very surprised you can't get a system that shows this problem - looking at the large number of people here it seems to be hugely prevalent.

But I do see the coming and going effect on my desktop system - I had it 100%, then it went away, I upgraded PS and it came back, then it went away by itself and currently it's come back - all without me doing anything at all. So maybe some exquisitely sensitive timing problem where a couple of microseconds either way has a huge effect on whether we see it or not.

I do know that setting the Wacom tablet to use Windows Ink, and having no PSUserConfig.txt file (both steps needed) gives me a correctly-working system 100% of the time, but that comes with horrible pen lag using sliders.

On my system I have a range of plugins (Nik effects, Topaz, Akvis Neon and a few others) - are your test systems absolutely clean of stuff like this and so start up significantly faster than mine? I guess everyone here uses real-world system that have loads of other applications installed, so startup interactions of some sort?

And a thought I've had for a while - I am not 100% sure that I haven't seen this issue very very very rarely in versions of PS that go back way beyond the major onset we have here. I don't think one can attach much significance to a hazy memory, but just possibly this issue has been in the code base for a very long time and it's only recently that some unrelated change has made it bite?

Anyway, not my place to tell you guys how to debug this. I'm actually a software developer and only a hobbyist Photoshopper, and I can feel the pain trying to work a bug that disappears when you run instrumented code to catch it. Been there, done that. If If you do craft some instrumentation I'm most happy to try it out.

Then you contact some users that you can reproduce and install something that can collect logs (I don't know programming at all). For example, this is how about collecting logs while sharing remote screens?
