P: Completely broken Hand tool (PS24.5) Hand Tool Sticking, sticky, not seeing mouse-up

This is a bug. Please don't move it to the Discussions tab.

And please don't merge into another unrelated thread. I will report a bug with this thread.

------------------------------------

I made a YouTube video using a keyboard mouse overlay to show what action I'm taking. I hope you can refer to refer to it.

https://youtu.be/Cle6dEgP5_Y

------------------------------------

I was disappointed that there were so many bugs that were not fixed in 24.5, but I was still trying to give it a shot.

However, this bug is pretty serious. Really...

Please see the video I attached.
If you watch the video, you will see that I am shaking the screen.
I'm not using a hand tool, it should release automatically, but that thing is sticky.

To release this sticky, pinned handtool, you'll need to make one more unconditional click.

Here's how I've organized them for your reference.

< What I can be sure of >

  1. Window10 (Tested a total of 14 PCs)
  2. Use WacomTablet
  3. Not related to preferences at all (Especially not related to Spring loaded, Flick panning stuff things)
  4. I've tried all the known Photoshop troubleshooting methods and no improvement.
  5. Even reinstalling Windows does the same thing
  6. Only in 24.5 does this bug occur with certainty. I can't reproduce it at all in earlier versions.

I'm not sure about the >

  1. Mac OS not tested
  2. I couldn't even test if it was a GPU company difference. I and my team all use NVIDIA

And while there are a few threads pointing this out, there doesn't seem to be a proper plan to fix it.

If this is not fixed in 24.6, 24.6 will be equally unusable as 24.5.

is there a way to enable logging so you can analyze our cases?

Not in the existing builds. I've been working on adding a logging mechanism so I can gather data from those of you who can reproduce at will. It still needs to be tested before it can be put into an official build.

@CJButlerwell you have quite a few reproducable bugs here, is there a way to enable logging so you can analyze our cases?

Why don't you bring someone in from outside Adobe who can demonstrate the bug in length so you can work on a fix? It's not a good enough excuse to say the bug just isn't happening at Adobe therefore you can't find a fix. Every Avenue should be exhausted to make sure this issue gets resolved because it's a serious problem

@Jqqerry

Already downgraded, bugfree now, but had to go back to 24.0

@Goyko  @chrisell99 Try versions earlier than 24.5 right now....

@CJButler Thank you for your response. But I also can't agree with anyone that this is hard to reproduce.

Do you happen to have a Windows PC that you don't use in Adobe Team? (Window10 or Window11 anything)

If possible, reinstall it OS to get rid of all variables, then just install Photoshop and try Spacebar. Then the bug will be reproduced immediately.

I replied by e-mail that it seems that there is already a problem from the installation file. Because the OS is reinstalled and reproduced like that in just installed Photoshop.

I am a fan of Adobe and I need Adobe's products for my job. So, I try not to write down negative thoughts and words as much as possible.
But the other minor bugs are the kinds of bugs that you can try not to use or ignore even if it's uncomfortable.
However, this bug can be experienced by Newbies as well as retouchers, and it is a very difficult bug beyond the inconvenience.

So to be honest (I'm sure Adobe development team is sad to see this, but I'm sorry) I don't think all releases after 24.5 where this bug hasn't been fixed have any meaning as a formal release.
It's a version that can't be used properly, but I don't know if any other function has been added.
So I just test every release and delete it right away.
I have to retouch a few hundred pictures every day to keep the due date, but this bug has such an adverse effect on my workflow, so I would like to give feedback while using the official latest release, but it is impossible.

I think for all of us it’s really easy to reproduce. No tablet required.
Open a document, zoom in. Press and hold the space bar to pan around and
let go of the space bar and the function always sticks on. You have to
click the mouse to “unstick” the hand. For me it’s Windows 10 but this
happens in the last two versions of photoshop for me both at home on
windows 10 and at work on windows 11.

Windows 10 ... check.

ALL drivers up to date.

No Cintiq.

So you guys try to fix/reproduce this bug since the last 11 versions of Photoshop?

Barely believable. I have learned from my early stages as a computer user, that's there is no "sometimes".

99% of the time the "bug" sits in front of the computer.

After all those others have the same bug, it's in the software, Photoshop in this case.

Adobe has over 2 decades experience in this piece of software and became the industry leader.

Fair enough.

But maybe you should implement less fancy new features, which can cause additional bugs or even amplify old ones, but keep the software clean and fix bugs first, before moving on to the next hot thing.

For us users it's not only buffling and frustrating, but costs hours and hours of recherching, fumbling, downgrading...

Time, in which we are supposed to satisfy clients and bosses with the help of software we pay for on a regular basis.

We all know, how unsatisfied clients and bosses because of missed deadlines feel like, right?

No offense intended, but get your stuff done, so that WE paying customers can do the same for our customers/bosses.

Thanks!

Hi All - We've been looking into this at length; we're definitely not ignoring it.

We've had extraordinary trouble reproducing this at Adobe, which is why we haven't been able to craft a fix yet.

We've never seen the bug happen on a Mac. Or Windows 11.

We've seen the bug happen briefly on a Windows 10 machine with a Wacom Cintiq attached. But when we try and add diagnostics to a debug build of Photoshop and then run that build on the machine where we just saw the bug happen, the bug fails to reproduce. And then when we go back to the original instance of Photoshop that just exhibited the bug, the bug is gone and everything works properly.

Baffling and frustrating for all of us, to say the least.

I'll post again when I have more information.
