P: Completely broken Hand tool (PS24.5) Hand Tool Sticking, sticky, not seeing mouse-up

This is a bug. Please don't move it to the Discussions tab.

And please don't merge into another unrelated thread. I will report a bug with this thread.

------------------------------------

I made a YouTube video using a keyboard mouse overlay to show what action I'm taking. I hope you can refer to refer to it.

https://youtu.be/Cle6dEgP5_Y

------------------------------------

I was disappointed that there were so many bugs that were not fixed in 24.5, but I was still trying to give it a shot.

However, this bug is pretty serious. Really...

Please see the video I attached.
If you watch the video, you will see that I am shaking the screen.
I'm not using a hand tool, it should release automatically, but that thing is sticky.

To release this sticky, pinned handtool, you'll need to make one more unconditional click.

Here's how I've organized them for your reference.

< What I can be sure of >

  1. Window10 (Tested a total of 14 PCs)
  2. Use WacomTablet
  3. Not related to preferences at all (Especially not related to Spring loaded, Flick panning stuff things)
  4. I've tried all the known Photoshop troubleshooting methods and no improvement.
  5. Even reinstalling Windows does the same thing
  6. Only in 24.5 does this bug occur with certainty. I can't reproduce it at all in earlier versions.

I'm not sure about the >

  1. Mac OS not tested
  2. I couldn't even test if it was a GPU company difference. I and my team all use NVIDIA

And while there are a few threads pointing this out, there doesn't seem to be a proper plan to fix it.

If this is not fixed in 24.6, 24.6 will be equally unusable as 24.5.

(cjbutler 1/12/24: edited title from "not reverting to cursor" to "not seeing mouse up" to reflect latest focus on lost mouse-up as root cause, and not just a stale cursor setting.)

I have another update on the macOS side of this problem. Last night, I tried to play a video game and noticed the same mouse behavior as Photoshop. Doing a quick search on r/macgaming brought up a solution: disabling window snapping tools. I use a program called Multitouch which allows for mouse gestures (which I don't use) and window snapping akin to what is built in natively in Windows 10 and 11.

That solved every problem I had with Photoshop tools sticking and lagging and fixed all of the mouse problems I was having in the game. I don't know if disabling window snapping works in Windows 11 because I haven't had to use any Adobe programs in Windows for a very long time and it would take a very long time to update Photoshop on my bad internet connection. I hope this helps anyone else struggling with irratic mouse behavior on macOS and I really hope this helps narrow something down on the Windows side of things. This has been months of frustration and cursing Adobe for no apparent reason.

For those on macOS having irratic mouse issues, I have read that this is caused by anything with window snapping enabled. This includes at least Better Touch Tool, Magnet and Multitouch at least. You do not have to disable the program completely for Multitouch and, from what I've read, Magnet. You only have to whitelist the program you are having problems with in either the app settings or, in my case, enabling the menu bar icon and selecting the "Disable gestures for [program]." This will allow you to still use the window snapping for Finder and other programs. It's inconvenient to have to manually resize Photoshop in the rare occassions I have to, but it's a lot better to have working tools and not want to throw a way too expensive laptop through a window.

So my annoyance level has just gone up quite a lot.

I originally had the issue running 24.5, and it persisted after I upgraded to 24.7

And then it mysteriously went away.

So now I have upgraded to 24.7 and it has come back

I have this problem with Radeon RX 570, so it is not nVidia problem

The "sticky" tool bug goes beyond the hand tool. It actually does it for every pending tool.

Like :

- getting eye dropper with alt when using the brush, eye dropper stays there when you let go of alt

- the pen tool, when dragging a point to curve it, the pen tool sticks and stays on the curve modification

Etc

Photoshop is basically unusable ...

It now does it too in Photoshop beta. It was not doing it. It did not updated Photoshop beta and it started to have these bugs too though. Feels like a hardware incompatibility problem. I don't know.

@mpphotog That's seems like a precious and interesting case.
I understand that most of the other threads that were split from this thread were Nvidia GPU users. I think there were Mac users, but I don't remember exactly.

Could you record your screen like me? (In Photoshop 24.7)

https://youtu.be/Cle6dEgP5_Y    <<< Something like this.

That would be helpful.

Unfortunately, I'm still having the sticky hand tool problem in v24.7. This is terrible. This bug makes it nearly impossible to work efficiently. I'm using a Logitech gaming mouse and a Radeon RX 6650 XT, so the issue isn't isolated to those using Wacom pens or nVidia graphics.

Much attention to this thread and unfortunate news for those who have reported with me...

July 2023 (version 24.7) release
Crash reports fixed through Photoshop beta usage
Select and Mask settings are not remembered upon relaunch
[Mac] Liquify and other filters lagging in Photoshop desktop
Open as Smart Object using PDF scale issue

Yes...As you can see, the current bug that we have been paying attention to since the 24.5 version is not on the fix list.
It's very unfortunate...

Let's wait for 24.8.............

Finally just went back to v24.0 and turned off auto-updates. PS hand tool works fine again. Definitley not updating until there is a fix
