P: Photoshop 23.0 - cannot open TIF files, generated in other programs

Starting from version 22.5.2 Photoshop stopped opening some tif files. The issue is related to a previously discovered vulnerability, the escalation of which, under certain conditions, may lead to arbitrary code execution - Adobe Security Bulletin.

Important: The problem is not with Photoshop, but with third-party software developers who do not keep track of current TIF specifications

A temporary solution to the problem is to convert files in third-party editors that completely update the structure of TIF files (for example, xnView, ImageMagik, etc.); such files can also be converted using the Camera Raw plug-in (via Bridge).

We all hope that Adobe can solve this problem and find a way to bring third-party files to modern standard. But I recommend that you independently contact the developers of programs whose files Photoshop cannot open. Notify them of the problem, recommend to contact @J453 using this community. Jeffrey can provide technical information to developers to solve this problem.

FYI: None of the GeoTIFFs from the "Norwegian Mapping and Cadastre Authority" work either. Like someone else said about contacting the Department for Environment Food & Rular Affairs, I'm sure getting a fix to their TIFF export system quickly implemented by a government agency is mostly wishful thinking. And all previously downloaded files still don't work obviously.  We were able to install an older PS version where they work fortunately, but not an ideal workflow.

In my case, the PS 23.0.1 update has fixed the problem. I can open all kinds of TIFF files. Thanks

Oh, I'm sorry. For batch processing of files, I use the command line and legacy version. Anyway, it's good that you found the GUI and were able to solve your problem.

I'm not sure if they're DEFRA tiffs or not. I create large orthomosaics from raw data. I can gladly send an example if that's helpful.

Hi Jazz-y,

I couldn't find the 'Convert' comand so just opened my un-openable 32bit TIF in imageMagik and resaved it and it now opens in Photoshop! Thank you so much!

Try the "convert" command (*.tif to *.tif) from the "imageMagik" package . It supports layers, documents up to 32-bit, and is fast and predictable.
When converting, it completely updates all tags and files in Photoshop open without problems. I used it to convert a lot of color tables for profiling - no problem.

Hi Kristen, do you mean the DEFRA TIFFs? If so, i'll sling them an email!

These TIFFs are output by OrthoVista (a Trimble program).

I still can't open my TIFFs in 23.0.1, getting the "can't open because not the right type of document" error message. I can't regenerate these, they were created by a vendor who has already completed the digitization, and we don't have Capture One. I am using Windows 10 and they were produced with Capture One 9 Macintosh.

I've let DEFRA know about your update Mohit, so we'll see what happens. Your latest release won't open their TIFFs so they must still have an 'un-checked' box in their TIFF builder somewhere. : )
