The message is 'sorry an error occurred' 'Photoshop has encountered a problem and needs to close'. It then closes down.

I updated to the latest version and still happening.

Nothing wrong with the files, I have opened them many times before.

Using latest version 27 in Windows

Hi, thanks to everyone for their help.

I resetted the preferences and reloaded and it still crashed when I tried to open a jpg.

I can't open Camera Raw at all, it crashes. Even if I go to Help/About Plugins/Camera Raw it crashes.

For camera raw - https://helpx.adobe.com/camera-raw/using/camera-raw-settings.html

Hold Ctrl key and go to Edit>Preferences>Camera Raw it should ask if you want to delete.

@kellyoh1 in Photoshop Settings/General there is a button to reset prefs on restart.

I've updated to the latest version already just now and it's still happening.

I don't quite understand the steps to reset the preferences manually. I'm fine to copy/backup the current settings and then restore as shown in the link you gave. But how am I resetting the preferences?

In any case, I think I'll have to do this tomorrow as it's now nighttime and I've already spent hours trying to sort this.

Hi @kellyoh1,

Apologies for the trouble you’ve been experiencing. @Kevin Stohlmeyer has already shared some solid troubleshooting steps, and since those didn’t resolve the issue, I’d recommend updating Photoshop to the latest release 27.1. We’ve just pushed this update, and it includes several stability fixes and improvements. Please update and let us know if the issue still persists. If it does, please try resetting Photoshop preferences manually. The steps are shared here: https://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/desktop/get-started/settings-and-preferences/backup-and-restore-preferences.html (Be sure to create a backup of your preferences before removing or resetting them.).

For more details on the 27.1 release, you can check the official release notes.

Regards,

Srishti

I have set it so that PS is using Nvidia only. How do I reset the Camera Raw preferences? Ps crashes when I try to open Edit/Preferences/Camera Raw

You can try resetting Camera Raw Preferences and then also disabling the outdated/unresponsive GPU:

It also crashes if I select Edit/Preferences/Camera Raw

Thanks... I updated both drivers. The Nvidia one is now up to date. The Intel assistant said their driver was up to date already. I went and specifically downloaded the latest version, but weirdly still showing as 70 months old. Unfortunately PS is still crashing.
