FrameMaker

How can I tell FrameMaker to remember the changes in preferences permanently. For instance, I would like FM not to take automatic backup on save or create Lock File on Network. Now, each time I open FM, I have to set these options under preferences but as soon as FM is closed or crashes the options are back to original.

Hello everybody,I am working with FrameMaker (not structured) as a daily driver for close to 20 years since FM6 on Windows NT, right now on FM12 and Win10Pro in a corporate environment (everything is managed by IT, patches, licenses, updates etc).After getting a new hard drive and having most of my software reinstalled I ran into a strange problem.If I copy a paragraph or part of a paragraph or a table row or a cross reference etc, and then paste it in the same document even on the same page to a new paragraph, there is a 50% chance of getting unformatted text as a result, much as you would paste it as text or as unicode.Going back and repeating the copy process and paste it again - again 50% chance of it working or pasting as plain text. Same if I cut something and try pasting it. This behaviour is the same as follows:Regardless of selection, e.g. double click or mark with mouse (end to end),regardless if copied and pasted via keyboard shortcut or context menu or FMregardless if

I am using the Indigo Responsive theme for html5 publishing from FrameMaker 2019. I have some trouble though...1: I get different icons for topics. But why? I can't see any pattern as to why FrameMaker chooses different icons for the topics.2: I was hoping to find a place to edit the text "Welcome to our help center" somewhere, but can't. It is there in the html files somewhere, ofcourse, but one would think there was an editor somewhere in the publishing process, but I can't seem to find it.Can anybody help me out here? 

Hi! I need to create a custom bullet in FrameMaker. I have version 15.0.4.751. Looking at several online instructions (such as this one), I'm seeing that I need to go to File > Utilities > Character Palette. I don't have this option in my version of FrameMaker. I went to the FM help, but the latest instructions there also refer to this option. Here is what I have.   Before posting this, I realized that the character palette may not be what I need. I specifically would like to use a .png file that I've created as the custom bullet. (Even more specifically - a "danger" icon that is a yellow triangle with an exclamation point inside of it.) If someone can send me a resource on that, or if it can even be done as a bullet, I would appreciate it -- I can't seem to find it and am probably using the wrong search terms. Thanks!

I am working on my first book in FrameMaker and I am looking to customize my TOC a little bit. I figured out how to add in the dotted line between section name and page number but now I am hoping to create seperators between chapters (Modules for labeling purposes) so that as items appear in the TOC they Appear in this format:Module 1 "Title of Module"....................1-3Section 1.1 "Title of Section" .................1-5SubSection 1.1.1 "Title of Subsection"...1-6Module 2 "Title of Module"....................2-20Section 2.1 "Title of Section"..................2-21SubSection 2.1.1 "Title of SubSection"..2-24 This would continue through all Chapters/Modules of the book.  

Yes, I know my set-up is obsolete to the point of dangerous … it has taken me months to get approval for new licences, and even now they've arrived I've been waiting since April for Central Support to install them. But, ancient software notwithstanding, everything has been working as expected until this afternoon. Starting from an FM 12 (non structured) file with one referenced graphic, I select File > Save as PDF … no "busy" cursor in FM, no Acrobat X Pro springing into life: just a 2,253K .tps file appearing in the file manager. I've got 5.48Gb spare on the networked drive, so I don't think that's the problem.Update on "suddenly" – another .fm file distilled via Save as at 13:45 without any problems. After checking a few others, all of which failed after generating the .tps, I made a copy of this file and tried Save as again at 15:30. Failed.Any hints/tips on solving this will be extremely welcome! Thanks in advance.

I am trying to create a table in FrameMaker where one cell has a red background, one has an orange background, and one has a yellow backgound. This won't be a table style -- it's just a one-time table that serves as a key to certain color codes in the manual. I cannot for the life of me figure out how to "select" a single cell and apply a color to it. I also can't find a way to do this in the Table Designer, since there is no option for "just this one cell." As with my previous question, I suspect there's an easy answer to this, and I'm just not finding it in all of the resources I've looked at so far. Thanks in advance for any help you can give me!

Can someone tell me how to delete a paragraph style? I'm sure it's very simple, but the instructions I found (select it in the Paragraph Catalog, then click Delete) aren't working. What am I doing wrong?

Hi, I'm trying not to print ElementBoundaries in to pdf when ElementBoundaries is turn on but square brackets are printed in pdf in Fm19. I tried use F_ApiSetInt(FV_SessionId, fm_docId, FP_ElementBoundaryDisplay, FV_ELEM_DISP_NONE). In Fm10 this solution is working pretty nice but in Fm19 don´t. Any suggestion how to fix this ? Please forgive me as this is something covered in several places but I have not found an exact scenario I am trying to map out, I have been using FrameMaker for a week so I am feeling a little overwhelmed. I am trying to create a document structure that allows me to number Chapters, Sections, Subsections, and Figures all in series. I am having the most trouble with getting the figures to number properly. I would like them to follow the following pattern if the document is set up as:1. Chapter Name (H: \t <n+>. \t)1.1 Section Name (H:\t <n>.<n+> \t \t)1.1.1 Sub Section (H:\t <n>.<n>.<n+>\t \t)Roman Numerals (H:\t <r>< =0>.\t \t) these should resel each time they are used  regardless of where Chapter, Section, Sub Section etc. Figure (H: Figure: <n>.<n+> \t)I have also tried using <$chapnum>, <$sectionnum>, <$subsectionnum> but the above format has worked better so far but I am open to suggestions to

I met Framemaker years ago and it worked beautifully. Now it does not work at all. I have spent hours and hours getting support from Framemaker. Instead it has wrecked my computer. And for live support I get people with impossible English accents. Framemaker is a wonderful program but it has been ruined by Adobe. I am very upset about this. 

I have a dita map, which I have created manually. It creates PDFs and HTML with or without FrameMaker and as expected it has the look of dita-ot pdf2. In FrameMaker:  Structure->DITA->Generate DITA-OT Output... However, I would like to use the dita bookmap option of FrameMaker in order to include the template files, such as the cover page, table of contents etc., into my book. When I use the dita map together with the publish option in FrameMaker, two issues come up: 1. after FrameMaker publishes the pdf, it crashes/hanging and 2: the published pdf creates page breaks after each of my topics and the numbering is not fine. Hello, I am working in FrameMaker 2017 and seem to be having trouble with the way the cross-reference text appears when my FrameMaker book is output to Responsive HTML.This is what it looks like - the text appears highlighted in orange. I am trying to remove the highlight entirely.  I've found that working in Publish Settings fixes most of the text/image appearance issues, but I can't seem to figure this one out. I have examined the Paragraph and Character Designers and Catalogs to confirm that nothing has been modified or added in there, with no luck. Most of the book was created by the tech writer before me - I have only added to it and done some general editing and formatting.Any input, suggestions or recommendations will be greatly appreciated. Thanks,Mary

The hierarchy of bookmarks in my FrameMaker files (FM 2015) are not reflected in the PDF files.   In the FM bookmarks, the hierarchy looks like this: book title   chapter title      1heading         2heading   In the PDF, the bookmarks look like this:  book title   chapter title      chapter title (wrong place in hierarchy)         1heading (ditto)             2heading (ditto)   "Chapter title" is in two different positions in the PDF bookmarks, but it should only be indented below "book title".   BTW, I selected the bookmarks by opening the book file, selecting all files, selecting Format > Document > PDF Setup > Bookmarks, specified the hierarchies, and clicking Set.   Does anyone know what's going on?   Catherine

I have a large number of individual files in several books. They all have the same list of paragraph tags. I need all of my tags. But, for one particular process, I only need a subset of them. I have set up a Customized List view in the Paragraph Catalog so that I only see a subset of them, because scrolling through the list is time consuming and click/scroll intensive.  I would like to import that list to all of the other files, so that I don't have to go file to file setting up the customized list. I've done some experimenting and I can't seem to do it. Is there some trick I'm missing? Or is it not possible? If it's not possible through the normal interface, is it something that might be possible through extendscript?

Hello, I would just like to confirm that when operating FrameMaker 2017 in a Windows 10 environment, I still need Adobe Acrobat Pro DC to create PDFs. For example, I just had an OS update to Window 10, and while FM 2017 has been re-installed on a new computer, AA Pro DC isn't (only AA Reader DC is) and I now I can no longer create PDFs from FrameMaker. I get an erro saying that "To execute "Save as PDF" command, you must have Acrobat Distiller version 5.05 or higher installed." Then I get another error about configuring Job Options. How do I get distiller and where I do I configure the Job Options in FrameMaker? I remember doing the job option setup years ago, and can't seem to figure it out now, and anyway, I still think I need the distiller first. Does anyone have any clue how I can proceed at this point?I need Adobe Acrobat Pro DC to do the work I normally do, regardless of how FrameMaker operates, and I'm pretty sure I still need it in the Windows 10 OS environment as well. Th

I am using Google Noto Sans and Indian Type Foundry Poppins with FrameMaker 2019 (15.0.4.751) on Windows 10. When using Save As PDF or Publish to PDF using the new PDF engine (not distiller) the SemiBold and Light fonts are appearing as a thicker weight. Opening the PDF in Adobe Illustrator, I can see that the affected fonts have a stroke outline with a non-zero width that is making the characters appear bolder. Italic versions of the fonts in the PDF also appear to have a larger skew angle, suggesting that it is an oblique.Using FrameMaker 2017 (14.0.4.511) on the same computer creates a PDF with the correct font weights and italics.

Hi all,is it possible to hand an animated GIF to the PDF output (remaining animated)?FM10 and AcrobatX work together rather fine concerning other animation formats such as SWF or AVI. I am not sure however wether the PDF format supports animated GIFs at all.Robert

I have TSC 2015. I am trying to setup Responsive HTML Help using FrameMaker. I have the following questions.1. In the ToC pane, how can I make the headings be nested. We have level 1, 2, 3. Heading 3 is displayed at the same level as Heading 2.2. The topic headings of the Chapters use the file names. i.e. in the ToC page I see a file name, and not the Heading 1. How can we set this.3.  Is it possible to set graphics as thumbnails.4.  Also, the titles appear in a blue bar. How can I change this?5. We don't use all the files in the help file, therefore I have made a separate book file for the help. Is that the way to go?Thanks

I need to add some bulleted lists in my templates, but I cannot edit the tab stops using the paragraph designer. Every time I try, the changes I make reset to whatever was there before. This is happening in every file that uses custom tags, not just one, and it affects all the custom tags (and they are all custom tags).   Editing tab stops in the default templates provided by Adobe is working, which I find supremely weird.   I have MIF-washed the files. I have restarted FrameMaker. I have restarted the computer.   I can make these changes by editing the MIF files, but that gets tedious and, seriously, why should I have to? All I can think is that, somewhere, a setting got changed but I can't imagine what it might be.   All template files are stored locally. FrameMaker is up to date (15.0.4.751) Windows build is: 10.0.17763.0   The only system changes were updates made to 4 CC applications yesterday (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, CameraRaw).   ETA: I ha

The past two weeks i switched from Windows 7 to Windows 10 and am still setting up details and testing things which worked well in W7. FrameMaker 15.0.4.751 is set up with startup scripts (in particular FMgraphic.jsx). ESTK is version 4.0.0.1.When i run one of the scripts developed in W7 times, I see a very strange behaviour of ESTK - which is reprodeable:Set up ESTK to use FM-15 - it takes longer than in W7 to 'connect'Run the script with F5The script has completed the drawing after 6 seconds,but it has not ended. The hour glass is visible until second 21.But it is still not possible to start the script again - at least for 10 seconds.If i want to leave ESTK with the X button, for at least 15 seonds nothing happens, then it closes (or most time it tilts).See the vidio on my website BTW it is not possible to use this URL in the "Insert Video2 function of this forum - it seems that only Youtube stuff is accepted ...
