FrameMaker

My company is new to outputting this way, and we own both options, so we are trying to figure out which is better for us. What are the differences in formatting options?

I have a bunch of color images in my FM document.  Is there a way to easily make them grayscale, so they will display on-screen and in hardcopy in grayscale?  I don't want to have to do it in the process of printing or PDFing the document. Thanks!

(Win10 + FrameMaker 2017 14.0.0.361)Following on from my publishing issues earlier yesterday, I decided to see if using Frame2017 would yield a better result.It .... didn't.Now when I publish the book to html5, I get prompted to view the output. Click the option and the browser opens and... displays the following message in italics and nothing else: "There is no topic layout page in this screen layout"I've googled in vain trying to figure this out.I made sure:- my selected Settings file is correct.- the Settings file is using the correct .slz file in Manage Layout on the Publish Settings 'General' tab.- the Settings file has imported the correct CSS file in Manage CSS on the Publish Settings 'Style Mapping' tab.Has anybody seen this happen before or know what step I'm missing?Thanks!

Is there a way to save the paragraph/character format tag I create in one FrameMaker 2017 book so that I can use them in other documents and books as well?

I have been printing to PDF forever, Yesterday, I needed to print a page out on my home printer. Now I'm getting an error message   "Cannot print because the selected default printer is not compatible with FrameMaker. (Cannot query escape 768.)Adobe PDF is selected as default printer both in FM and for Windows.Restarted FM; restarted computer; reinstalled FM and latest patch. Still same error message.I have docs that I need to get out today and I cannot seem to fix the issue.Thanks,

Dear community,What bothers me is the page numbering in the toolbar of the PDF Reader. In my documents, the TOC is Roman numbering and the rest is Arabic numbering, however the toolbar does not display iii (3 of 900) nor 1 (20 of 900) for the first page of the first chapter. When placing .svg in FrameMaker 2017 they appear bad and they print bad. Is there a setting FrameMaker that needs to be set to handle .svg. The fonts are loaded?thank you

I have been trying to add consistent indentation to my headings in TOC as seen below. H1 headings are a topic and H2 heading are the subtopics. The image below is a Microsoft Word document.The same I need to mimic in Adobe FrameMaker but it just isn't happening. Here's what I end up with:I have tried adding tabs and editing the reference page, but the H2 heading ends up at the right side or either looks horrendous. Can someone help me with this?

I am getting a "The "Font Awesome 5 Free Solid" Font is not available.  "Times New Roman" will be used in this session."error. I have installed that font. I double-checked too. I restarted Windows (10 Pro) even.It's been awhile since I used FM regularly. How do I track this down and fix it. Even better, how to I prevent that automatic substitution from being made, and if I can't, how to I locate the paragraph and character styles that have been converted automatically--without touching any that might actually be using Times New Roman--and change them to the correct font?

Hello,Above is a screenshot of a TOC file. I added the Index to the TOC, and now the numbers do not line up on the right. I've tried clicking in the "Index" line, clicking "Right Tab" on the Paragraph Formatting toolbar (3rd arrow below), and then clicking below the ruler across the top directly underneath the rightmost triangle (shown below). The page number lines up and looks great until I update the book. When I update the book, the Index page number moves back to the left. Should I be editing something on the Reference Pages?

I have inherited a Framemaker document that has a lot of cross references. These cross references have the format set as Title_and_Page (the cross reference displays the heading and what page it is on).When I make any changes to the document these page numbers soon become out of date. It would be extrememly useful if I knew a way of updating all cross references in a document and still keeping the formatting. I have tried updating them using the Edit menu - Update Rerences option but this just replaces them with plain text, which is not what I want.Is there a way of updating these cross references and keep the Title_and_Page formatting setting?I am using structured FrameMaker 10.Thanks.

I need to automatically insert an image in the outside margin next to a specific paragraph tag.This is what I'm trying to achieve. I left the borders on to show the anchored frame and text fram border.I know I can automatically insert an image below or above the paragraph tag and use that in a 2-cell table, but that creates too much space above and below the paragraph tag.I was wondering if anybody have any suggestions of automatically inserting the graphic next to the paragraph tag, or using the paragraph tag option, but have the table row height not resize to the image size. It's used several places in our documents and updating the image file at each instance is a hassle.

I've made a stand alone TOC and a stand alone LOF for one manual; they're both rather short and would easily fit onto the same page when I make the document into the final PDF.  Is there a way to do this?  Considering that these lists are in different FM documents, it wants to print them on their own separate pages.

Hello. I am using FM 2015 in a Windows 10 environment.I have set my printer to Adobe PDF and have opened all the files in a book containing about 20 files.When I put the cursor in an open file and select Save as PDF, the PDF Setup window is truncated:I can't grab the edge of the window to expand it.When I select the book file and select Save as PDF, I get the full PDF Setup for Selected Files window with no problem.I note that someone wrote in with the same problem but opposite behavior back in February of 2017. That person had a corrupted PDF setup window for the book file and got the correct window for the individual .fm files. A resolution was never posted.Any ideas as to why this is happening and how to stop it? Thanks.

I can easily create a document with two connected flows on the body pages. For example, I can create a new Portrait document and add an autoconnected flow tagged B to its Right master page. Once I've done so, I can go back to the body page and start to put content into either or both flows. As expected, FM adds new pages as needed. Flow A on p. 1 connects to Flow A on p. 2; Flow B on p. 1 connects to Flow B on p. 2; succeeding pages. The content on one flow may fit in fewer pages than that of the other. Also as expected, pages may become empty if I delete content and when I save the document, FM discards the empty pages.Suppose, however, that I have an existing multi-page document with Flow A but not Flow B. If I import master pages from the new document with both flows, I get both flows on every page. However, Flow B on one page is not connected to Flow B on the next page. There are several ways to see that they are not connected:1. Text symbols display an end-of-flow symbol in Flow B

When I right + click on an element, I can choose Assign ID to Element. Is there an ExtendScript function or method for doing this? Thanks.Alternatively, is there a solid JavaScript algorithm for generating an unique value? -Rick
