FrameMaker

I document a modular system that uses some of the same screens between the different modules (and each module is a book because companies can pick and choose which modules they want to purchase and we only give them documentation for those modules). I don't want to have a separate file for each book (placing the book name in the header for each) because if that one screen changes I have to change each file in each book (which defeats single-sourcing). Therefore, I want to one file with a variable that will read the name of the book file I am currently regenerating. The only other solution I could think of was to make the header text contain all headings, then create a conditional tag for each book name.................clunky to say the least, and I already have more conditional tags than I'd like (4 of them in each book). I have a DITA-OT plugin that defines a transtype. What I need to know is what are the steps I need to take to implement this transtype so that other Frame users could process DITA using that transtype?

All,I have a need with framemaker I do not know how to handle. Here is an example of my need:Let's say I need to produce a document related to a house, which can be 1 2 or 3 floors.I will then produce a variables :"nb of floor" which will be "1" "2" or "3", and use this variable in text content. I have a FrameMaker 12 document where the first chapter heading, a 1Section, will not display in the PDF TOC when I convert the files to a PDF.  The 2Section heading shows up, but not the 1Section for that chapter The other 1Section headings in the chapters show up just fine..I have tried everything.  Does anybody know why this in not showing up?  Thank you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi folks,I am authoring a text which uses mathematical equations quite frequently. (These are made with Framemaker's equation and not mathml) I notice, however, that equations (say a three by three matrix) leave white space correctly above the matrix, but that the bottom of the matrix bleeds into the following lines of text. Any way to fix that? The document publishes just fine as a pdf with no problem. thanks! Phil Wood

Hi,I'm trying to modify the template called Bk 7 (in the More Samples folder that comes with FrameMaker) so that the Chapter Number is on the left side and the Chapter Title is on the right (basically I want them to switch places), however I don't understand enough about Run-In Heads, etc, and I can't make it work.Is there an easy way to do this?Thanks!

Hi All,I am applying a custom shading to a cell, according to an attribute setting, however after the custom shading is applied,  I lose the table rulings that were present. I am an experienced structured FM user. I am trying to set up a structured authoring environment for a small engineering firm. I write and edit documentation for aviation engineering projects. I work with six to eight engineers and designers who contribute content to our technical publications.I want to minimize authoring overhead by eliminating manual formatting from my contributor workflow. Ideally, I would manage EDDs, DTDs, templates etc. and deploy several XML author licenses to collect content. However, the cost of an XML author license per each potential contributor is prohibitive for my small firm. I would love to be able to deploy XML Author through Creative Cloud either as a single-app license or as part of a team license.Several other authoring platforms including Flare (no structured support, I know) offer a floating license option. I think a floating license option would make the Structured Frame/XML Author combo more competitive for Adobe and more attractive to small firm

Do I need to uninstall or deactivate TCS4 before installing TCS5?

Hello,I'm trying to create a book folder from a script. From what I understand the relevant methods are "NewSeriesObject" and "NewSeriesBookComponent"; they only take the object name. OK, so I create it and get what seems to be a file without a valid path. I then try to change the "ComponentType" property to "FV_BK_FOLDER", but cannot do it. If I try to change it directly, it just stays put; if I try to change it via "SetProps" the document simply disappears from the book. The FDK has a sample of how to create a book component in C, but it creates a file, not a folder. Otherwise it seems to be as I described: first insert the component and then change it (the sample changes the name). The FDK reference doesn't describe the "ComponentType" property though.Does anyone know how to create a folder?Kind regards,Mikhail

Dear all!Obviously the reason for the crashes are the data from RH (master page, skin ...)My question: How can I go back to the default settings of FM12?And where can I find which kind of RH data is valid for the publish function.

My company's writing guidelines state that the figure # and caption be displayed when referencing a figure that is on a different page. All of my captions have periods. Is there any way to hide the period in the X-ref?I now have, "see Figure 14, "caption.," on page 55."I want, "see Figure 14, "caption," on page 55."Have searched this forum and the book Unstructured FM 11 without success.Any help would be greatly appreciated! Hello,I'm using Framemaker 11. I made a dokument with footnotes and cross refenrences on those footnotes. After exporting the document to pdf the cross references became hyperlinks of thoses fotenotes (i.e. while clicking on those refenrence numbers it jumps to the corresponding footnote entry) but not the original footnotes themselves. What do I have to do, that after clicking on the actual fotenote number the pdf jumps to the fotenote entry at the bottom?

(FM12.0.3 on Win7)A change from showing conditional indicators to hiding them appears to persist.The reverse -- from hiding conditional indicators to showing them -- does not persist.(To demonstrate, I tried to attach an 827KB movie but the insert tool did not allow it.)This is an irritating change from what I recall from FM11. I don't believe I can rely on FM12 with this behavior.  To get the same result, I have to do more work with FM12 than with FM11.The behavior also challenges maintenance of a multi-file project. Consider this behavior (no recording attached):In File1.fm, I set controls on Show/Hide Conditional Text and then Apply. Works as expected. I save File1.fm.In File2.fm, I import formats from File1.fm, specifying only Conditional Text Settings, and then Import. Works as expected. We use an extensive list of short cut keys to import structured code and precedent text into our documents. Every new release of FM comes out with new keys which overlap our customisations.The Esc + li we have used for over 10 years to insert a list item. In FM 11 this combination attempts to launch Adobe Illustrator which I do not have installed and FM and the following dialogue is displayed. I have looked through the normal menu configuration files but cannot locate the source.I would really appreciate if someone can help with this, and why any of these keys combination would not be working in FM 11.Esc pdEsc spThank youKevin

Does anyone know why I'd not be able to install the FM 12.0.4 update? I've currently got 12.0.3.424 installed, and when I go to the Help menu, the "Updates" menu item is greyed out. When I run the Creative Cloud app it doesn't list any FM updates there. I've downloaded the 12.0.4 update installer from the website, and when I run the installer manually it tells me ..     Update Failed      Updates could not be applied     Please contact your Administrator if you wish to apply updates on your machine. Updates have been     suppressed by the Administrator.I'm the admin. I have admin permissions. I get the same message if I run this "As Administrator".Any ideas?Thanks!...scott

I'm working in FM 11 and get a "Use Condition Indicators setting is inconsistent" error message when printing my book as a PDF. I have two child books in a parent book, so my book structure looks like this:I've been trying to fix this all day and tried mif washing to delete the stuff shown below, but it didn't work:So I started from scratch: I opened each .fm file separately (not from within the book, but the file itself) and deleted all conditions. Sometimes I had to delete them from the Master Page in order for them to stay deleted. (Not sure why, because those conditions were not on my Master Page, but it was the only way the conditions would stay deleted.) Then I updated each of my child books. The child books print to PDF without errors. I clicked on each child book and selected all files in the book, and no conditions were present. Good.Then I made a new book and added the front cover, checked the parent book for conditions and there were still none. Good. As I added each child b

I'm wondering if anyone else experiences this: if I do too many Control + Z's in a row to undo text changes, my page layout changes. I haven't determined the magic number when this happens, but I've sadly had it happen more than once and I saved my file before realizing it. So lots of rework to fix my layout. (In particular it changes from a two-column layout to three columns. Even the Master Page changes.) Importing formats from other files sometimes fixes it, sometimes not. I'm just wondering if this is a bug? Thanks.

I'm reviewing several dozen text insets, and it'd be handy to know which documents contain which text insets. This would allow me to see the text insets in context in the various documents, which might help me understand the content of the text inset better if I have questions when I view the stand-alone text inset.
