FrameMaker

Hello!I am using Framemaker 11.I have a book including several files. Each file includes a copyright text located in a separate Fm file, and imported by reference.The problem: if I move the folder that includes the book and its files, even though I put it in a place so that the link between the files and the text is the same, it seems like Fm cannot retrieve the path to the text.Thus, I am forced to open every single file in the book and to re-import the text in each of them.My question : is there a way to import the text into all the files of the book at once?Thanks in advance for your answers.

Using FM 9.0p255Even though my files don't have any PNGs at all and never did, my color defs are stuffed with "fm_gen_..." statements, and they grow in number all the time.It's a problem because I have to manage CMYK colors in this doc and the junk statements make scrolling a terrible hassle. No point in deleting them out vial MIF conversion--they just come right back in.Whilst searching for an answer, I found this in the FM 9 MIF manual: "FrameMaker will automatically generate new colors when multiple tags are applied on text. The ColorTag tag that is generated is named with the "fm_gen_" prefix and appended with a system-generated integer."These files are full of overlapping conditions, and they change a lot. Could this really be the cause of the junk color statements?Is there any way to manage conditionalizations to at least minimize the number of junk color statements?Would appreciate hearing from FM experts who could answer these questions.And--this is for any of you Adobe FM empl

Hello,I have DITA files need conversion to structured FrameMaker files. I tried generating conversion table with DITA files and defined elements (of structured FrameMaker that I have) against each element in the table. But this is not working.Is there any other way to accomplish this task?

I've been tasked with solving a tricky problem at my office. Briefly: We've got a technical manual that needs to be printed each time we sell a piece of equipment. Currently, the manual is produced using a combination of MS Access DB and a convoluted Word doc that uses Mail Merge to pull data from the Access DB into the appropriate fields. The DB has a hundred tables or so, and some of the tables are "calculated" values - i.e. the value in the fields is calculated based on values entered in other tables within the DB. The Word doc uses some kind of "if-then-else" logic to determine which tables to use for which fields when building the doc. This whole setup is currently maintained by the engineering, sales, and marketing departments.We currently use FM11 (unstructured) in the Technical Writing department, and my boss is asking me to figure out a way to migrate the Access/Word doc described above to a format we can use so we can take ownership of the documentation process for this parti

I've been working with FM for a little while now and have gradually picked up how to manipulate EDDs and such to do what I want. I've also learned a bit about output templates and how to work with them. But here's the thing that's driving me crazy:I make changes to a template; I make sure to import the EDD into it; I can test that EDD formatting within the template and it works. I then attempt to create output from a DITA map, and the EDD formatting does not appear.I have seen similar topics in this forum, but in those cases it seems to be a case of the OP forgetting to import the EDD into their templates. I know I have done this, and repeatedly at that. I also know that FM is looking at the template I created, because I can see other changes I've been making to the paragraph formats n the template. I've imported the same EDD into every output template I can find (I have backups of the originals), and the formatting still does not seem to take.Oh, and the EDDs used to import with error

The type of first header on the page varies depending on the content, such as a Header 1, Header 1 Top, Header 2, Header 2 Top, etc.What syntax could be used to define the <$paratext[paratag]> in a Running H/F to pick up the header first header on the page?  Simply using a Running H/F1 with <$paratext[Header 1]> would miss Header 1 Top.Thank you.

Hi,I am running a German version of FrameMaker. All commands in the EDD appear in German. What happens when someone uses the EDD with an English or Chinese version of FrameMaker? Will this work as well?If editors have a look at the EDD, do they see German commands or commands in their own language?Can I simply change to English instead of German commands?  Thanks for your reply.Apollo102

Hi,I have a frustrating problem with unstructured FrameMaker 10. For my documents, I use a number of Font Catalogs created by my predecessor. All of them carry out their font overrides where indicated, except for the Italic one. FM marks up that the font override is Italic but  doesn't actually change anything in the document.Italic is configured as:Family - As IsSize - Unable to select As Is for some reason so is blankAngle - ItalicWeight and Variation - RegularColor - BlackAll other options "turned off"The only difference I can tell from this character override and others is that the others have a Font Family selected.The same behaviour occurs no matter what document I'm working on.If I create a new character override in the Designer - say, Italics, the same behaviour is found, hence my belief about the need for Font Family.I am also unable to just override it with CTRL+I.I note from various other questions that others have experienced similar problems, but no definitive resolut

A specific task reminds me of a question I've often wondered about but never asked … copying all paragraph styles from file A to file B is simple, but is there no native mechanism for copying just selected styles? I know I can copy a formatted paragraph and then update the paragraph catalog in file B, but sometimes that's a bit fiddly.If there is an answer, I hope it doesn't involve a plug-in; I'm not allowed those :-{

I deleted the file, saved the book, updated the book, updated the TOC references, and confirmed that the file has been deleted -- but it's still there in the TOC. How can I get it out of there? And at what point in the proceedings should it be gone from the TOC?

Hello,Several of the Level 1 entries in the index of some of my manuals can have long lists of Level 2 entries under them, and sometimes the long list will break between columns or pages. I would like to begin the new column or page with "Topic A, continued" before resuming the list of Level 2 entries (where "Topic A" is the Level 1 entry). How do I do this? Up to now, I have two choices for dealing with long lists of Level 2 entries that break between pages/columns: (1) Insert a page or column break before the Level 1 entry, which can make that column very short with a lot of empty space (doesn't look very good), or simply allow the list of Level 2 entries to break, with no attempt to keep the list together in one column. Sometimes this works OK, but there are times when neither solution is adequate and I would like to be able to inform the user that an indented list on page 3 of the index is actually continued from the same list on page 2.The online help offers instructions for inser

I found that I for customizing the quick element toolbar I need to edit the file quick_element.xml in the folder C:\Users\<user name>\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\FrameMaker\12\WorkSpaces\Structured\WYSIWYGView\toolbars. The location given in the online help (http://help.adobe.com/en_US/framemaker/using/WS2d2a17056e219198-10de064142a20156dc-7fff.html) does not work.It turns out now that my custom icons only appear when I edit an existing XML file. When I create a new one using the DITA menu, they are not displayed. As soon as I save the new file and open it, the icons appear again.. is this a bug?Robert

Hi,I have a general fundamental question about XML and tables. Why should XML already concretely map tables in its structure XML markup data? I think "tables" already represent a kind of formatting. Normally one does not want any format-related markup data in XML. Is this not a contradiction to the basic idea of XML? Is this a compromise, so that there are no complex r/w rules required and it will be technically easier?Thanks for your reply.Apollo102

Using FM 10.I set up a new application MyDITA by coping an existing 1.1 DITA structure.In DITA > Options, I created a new application mapping and entered my Map and topic mappings from MyDITA application.I chose DITA > New DITA File > New <map> and created a ditamap file that includes two of my topics. Okay so far.In the ditamap (FM interface), I double click a topic to open it and I get the following error.Could not open DTD file: C:\Users\xxx\myfolder\topic.dtdParse error at line 10, char 1: Error in processing external entity reference Parsing aborted.Why is it looking for the DTD in my local folder where the XML files are? Why isn't it looking in the location of the MyDITA application?I can open the XML file by in Explorer by right-click and choose Open in FrameMaker. It asks to confirm MyDITA application and it opens fine. I cannot open it from the ditamap and cannot create a composit document from the ditamap to create a TOC.Can anyone help with this? Hi guys,I wonder if you people were already facing the same issue as me yesterday.Upon import of some self defined XML structure into my template I've been facing the problem, that inline graphics in a first line have been cut in the upper area to fit the text flow frame.Newly created graphics frames did span across the text frame, showing the full underlying image.I did manage to display all correctly with some trickery (using some empty graphics frame in the background with border spacing) in the template, but I wonder if there's some other (proper) way to reach this result.Is it a bug, that FM doesn't respect the sizes of image frames in the first line of a text flow upon XML import?Are there any attributes I've been missing to define in my RWR?So far I'm controlling position, bloffset, height, width, xoffset, yoffset, align and source of the imported image element.I'm in complete control of the EDD, RWR, template, structure and FM installation if anything needs to be changed there.

Sudden flurry of management activity after reseller notices there's no documentation in the package the developers send … so, of course, FM/Acrobat choose now to start playing up. A .book that has saved as .pdf without any problems beyond the treacle-through-muslin speeed I associate with FM10 on Windows 7 now hangs; and I also notice that when I break it into a suite of smaller book-jobs, .tps files are being left behind after distilling has finished.Sympathy would already be good <g> Tips on diagnostics would also be appreciated.

Hi, here are a couple of questions about working with MIF files in FrameMaker 12.In the 'ADOBE FRAMEMAKER 12 MIF Reference" PDF, in Chpt. 2 (page 9), it says:"If you use FrameMaker to edit a MIF file, you must prevent it from interpreting MIF statements when you open thefile by holding down a modifier key and clicking Open in the Open dialog box."  (in Windows, the Modifier Key is Control or Shift)... I can't seem to get this to work in Frame 12 - if I shift- or Control-click the File menu, it doesn't *have* an Open command. If I go via an Open dialog box, it doesn't take any notice of the shift or control key being held down. Is this broken in Frame 12, or am I doing it wrong?Also, I am interested in adding MIF files to a book. (I'll tell you why in a minute but if I click the 'Add file' icon in the book pane, and select the MIF file and click open, I get a pop up dialogue saying:"Add Non-Document File to Book:    The file '<filename>.mif' is not in recogniza

This might be of use to people trying to extract embedded graphics from Microsoft Word.I came in on a project in which some very graphic intensive (and huge!) Word documents were being converted to FrameMaker. Since you cannot copy and paste graphics from Word to FrameMaker without compromising the bit depth, the procedure used to extract the graphics was to take screenshots of the images and save them as separate files. I found this to be less than ideal because it added a lot of unnecessary work and furthermore restricted the image resolution to the the screen resolution (which in many cases brought down the resolution significantly). A much painless approach to extracting graphics from a Word document is as follows:Open the document in Word.Choose File>Save as Webpage. The Save As dialog displays.In the "Save As Type" dropdown menu, choose Web Page (*.htm, *.html)Click Save. FM 11DITA: 1.2OS: Windows 7We save our ditamap/xml documents as "Book 11 with fm components (*.book)" to create .fm files from the .xml using the ouputTemplates in the C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\AdobeFrameMaker11\Structure\xml\DITA\outputTemplates directory. I modified the original template files that we need, using the original's variable (Chapter Title Name <$chaptertitlename> for populating the title in the bookTitletpl.fm template file. This works great--whichever document I'm publishing, the correct title appears in that variable. I'd like to do the same (using a variable) for Version number, but I can't figure out how to do that using a user/system variable and/or even by using some other means (ditaval file, etc.). I am using FrameMaker 11's shared review and have a few documents that I can not successfully alter the deadline. The deadlines have passed and I would like to extend them. I can do this on most documents, but not on a few key ones.Any insight is much appreciated.
