I generated a MTOC for my document but it jumps to the next column way before it gets to the end of the first column. I "balance columns is unchecked in both the "Customize Text Frame" and "Column Layout". Any idea what's causing this (and how to fix it)?
Hi all, When you install FrameMaker (2019,2020,2022) the version of English can be one of several, however I am particularly interested in North America (aka USEnglish) or International (aka UKEnglish). These options are also available if FrameMaker is packaged in the Adobe Admin Console, as shown below. The Use OS Locale, presumably overides this, unfortunately clicking the 'i' does nothing, so I can only guess. The choice, after a both a manual and a packaged installation seems to be reflected in two places:maker, ini - Language=UKEnglish under ;Frame] (this setting is not in the latest ini settings PDF); orthe registry - HKLM\SOFTWARE\Adobe\FrameMaker\17\Language=en_GB So the questions are:What is the effect of this choice, or at least what is different between the two. For example if I have the word 'realise' in text and run a spell check, I would expect it to pick this up if the language was International and vice a versa for 'realise' if the language
I have created a book with six front matter documents, then Chapters 1-17. Everytime I try to insert a stand-alone TOC, the chapter numbers I have set for each document revert back to their order in the book. In other words, no matter how I number my chapters, Chapter 1 always starts numbering as Chapter 7, because it's after the six front matter documents. Chapter 2 is Chapter 8, etc. I know there is a way to circumvent this, but it has been a couple of years since I used FM, and I'm a little rusty. Also, my TOC is just 20 pages of my cover page??? Never seen this before. Any help is appreciated. Nick
I have a lot of problems using Translation and export/import XLIFF. I am working with structured documents running FrameMaker 2020 16.0.4.1062 on Win10.The documents look ok. Valid structure. All cross references ok. All insets ok. All fonts ok. Nothing suggesting that this is somehow a corrupt document. When I export to XLIFF I get a "clean" conversion report with no errors. So IMPORTING the XLIFF I have just exported ought to work painlessly.Only it doesn't. FrameMaker crashes while importing into the exact same FrameMaker file the exact same XLIFF I have just exported. And this time theres lot and lots of errors in the conversion report. Leaving me wonder about the reliablity of the first export report. Has anybody any experience to share regarding this feature?
I would love an extension of the book panel that displays a + sign next to each file in the book. Clicking on that plus sign would expand the file and list a hierarchical outline of its Double-clicking on a heading would take me to that section.Anyone has seen or has an extension that could do that?
I've got one very long continuous table broken up into three columns per page and a lot of pages of that... everything seems to flow well right up until the end, when this weird break happens; I tried fixing it by: selecting all then setting Page Break to "Place at its default location", changing Format > Column Layout so "Balance Columns" was unchecked, trying variations of "Keep With" options... nothing seems to fix it. Any ideas?
Is there a way to save the chapters of a FrameMaker document as separate HTML files so that the cross-reference links between them work? If I save each chapter separately in HTML format, the links between them are broken. Thank you.
Hi all, If you have not seen this (as I did not) there is a new vunerability in FM 2019/2020 to do with SVG files and fonts (Fix critical vulnerabilities in FrameMaker | August 2022 (adobe.com)). Note that for us Aussies, the link on the Australian site is broken so you have to use the US site!). For any Adobe folk, was this posted to this community? If not, why not! It would also be nice if the FrameMaker team had packaged up the update, not left it as a manual copy of files. Jon
The latest release of FrameMaker comes with an out-of-the-box support for the translation framework. Easily convert your FrameMaker book or a DITA map into XLIFF (XML Localization Interchange File Format) and share it with your localization vendor for easy processing. Once you have the translated files back, use the import feature to get the converted content back into FrameMaker. With a wide range of options to control what in included in your translation package, you have a better control over your content. For more information, see Translation. See videos on Out-of-the-box translation support and Pre-segmented XLIFF for easier translation.
Hi,I am using FrameMaker 2020 and I am trying to figure out how to have the table numbers in the book appear in sequence. The book has many tables and there are 14 chapters. Is there a simple way to do this, and if so, can someone please give me explicit information on how to achieve this? Thank you in advance. Cheers,Elizabeth
We are also struggling with the result of the HTML5 output. When the file is export as a PDF all hyperlinks work fine, but when exported to HTML5 the link adress is modified if the adress contain characters as "?". If a link to a external file end like this: http:xxxx/view the adress in the HTML output is modified to http:xxxx/view%20 We have contacted the support about 15 times during the last six month, more or less without any response from Adobe and they just close down ticket. Still waiting for a solution -not any manual work around. Also have the problems with broken internal X-ref. Very disappointed of Adobe unproffessional support and ignorance of their customers. After this we now active looking for other solutions to create proffessional manuals with any Adobe involvment.
Is there any method to batch remove conditional tags (both used and unused) from FrameMaker 17 documents without writing or buying a script?
Being one of the people that (dare I say) like using the Welcome Screen, I've customised the Welcome screen in both FM2019 and FM2020. In particular, I've added the following HTML to open a PDF document located on our corporate network: <a href="file:///K:\Training Admin\Training Collateral\Source Material\Templates and Style Guides\Style Guide\Structured Style Guide\PDFs\Current\Training Manual\Structured Style Guide.pdf" target="_blank">Open PDF</a> In both FM2019 and FM2020, this works perfectly. Click the link and the PDF document opens in Adobe Reader. In FM2022, I can't seem to get it to work the same. Using the same HTML, nothing happens when I click on the link. For some reason, FM2022 doesn't recognise the target="_blank" attribute. If I remove the target="_blank" attribute, the PDF does open, (it does replaces the Welcome screen tab, which is annoying but understandable), so I know there's no problem opening the PDF. It just won't open with Adobe Re
Hi All, I have this basic markup in XML, although I can modify it if necessary: <figure> <image src="graphics/FEA77D1FF412F5D071259E7DF30D9C0F.cgm.gif" dpi="600"/> </figure> When I open the XML with FrameMaker, I want the graphic to import at the correct DPI. This is what I have in my read/write rules: element "image" { is fm graphic element "image"; attribute "src" { is fm property file; is fm attribute; } attribute "dpi" { is fm property dpi; is fm attribute; } } This is what I get in FrameMaker. The graphic doesn't import and the src attribute value doesn't get passed in. I think I may need to have something in my DTD to make it all work. Any pointers would be appreciated. Thank you.
Hello all, I'm a technical writer and im wondering if there is any way to automate the process of importing graphics and imatges into the books. My current dilemma is that when something on my company's software chganges (user interface) I then have to go retake and re-upload 50 images. Is there any way to automate this process? Any advice is helpful, thank you!
Hi,There are some instances in my document where the heading titles continue onto a second line of text. When this happens, my mini TOC does not format correctly. I'd like for the second line in the mini TOC to format like the first line, with the leader dots and chapter/page numbers on the right of the page. Is there a way to do this? Mini TOC:Reference Page: Thank you in advance.Nick Caggiano
I have been using a fairly ancient version of TCS that includes Frame 12 and RoboHelp HTML 11 for more than a decade now, and though I purchased a monthly subscription to the latest version (2020, I believe), I am terrified of the time-suck involved in converting, and what if things don't work? I am talking about 1600-page user guides developed in Frame and then LINKED in RoboHelp 11 for context-sensitive HTML help. These are complicated documents with lots of conditional processing, cross references, cross-document links, etc. I know how to do this in ancient TCS, but when I opened up the latest version I was COMPLETELY lost. I need to estimate the time involved, as well as get approval from the boss before diving in, or I need to just cancel the subscription and keep my stone tablet. Suffice it to say, I need some serious advice, and possible hand-holding here. Does Adobe Tech Support help with massive conversions like this with the subscription, or is this an extra charge? Is this s
I am using FrameMaker 2020, and when I am working remotely, something is going wrong when I convert Frame files to PDF. I have tried all publishing methods (Save as PDF, Print to PDF, and Publish to PDF). Each time, the PDF displays the bullets as ellipses (three dots). I don't havc this issue when I convert files while working in the office. Any idea what the issue could be?
Dear experts The standard Find/Change panel provides immeate reaction: both the edit field for the search term and the Find button are active. Hence I can work like this: Invoke the panel with CRTL+F Type what I want to look for Press Enter In ScriptUI i can not mimic this behaviour. The following does not work: wPalF.g02.eFindWhat.text = KLD_F.GetTextOfSelection(); wPalF.g02.eFindWhat.active = true; wPalF.g08.btnFind.active = true; wPalF.show(); Only the button is active when this snipped has been executed. In ScriptUI obviously only one element can be active in a dialogue/panel.at a time. → Any ideas how to overcome this limitation?
FM 17.0.0.226 - The same thing happens as I had in FM-16.0.0.764: No MiniTOC in PDF via PDFL There is no *.sts file in %appdata%\...maker.ini - hence the default is used. Now I have copied from FM-16 to FM-17 appdata my Standard.sts and opened it in FM-17. It has been converted. But when using this: Saving does not end - FM stalls What is saved already is opened and contains 8 pages with just some picutres out of the context I can not close the Saving message (progress bar), need to kill FM-17 After a new starat of FM-17 I check for the sts in the Publish panel: it is still there. I try again to creae a PDF via Publish: This time it completes after Postprocessing PDF But the output does not show the miniTOC - see screen shot above Now I do the same via Save as PDF (I do not expect a change in the output, but one never knows): Nothing new (no miniTOC) → How to get the miniTOC into the PDF?
I'm having a problem using capture replace groups in my Find/Change script. For example, I'm fixing missing hyphenation in phrases. I find "aim off points" using \b([Aa]im[ ]?off[ ]?point)([s]?) and replace it with aim-off point$2, which should give me "aim-off points" as my replacement. My find/replace works perfectly using FMs Find/Change panel (see below). When I try it in my script I get this result: aim off pointaim-off points$2. The $2 capture group searches for the plural of "points." In my script tester I am using this to mimic the FM Find/Change panel:FindReplace ("\\b([Aa]im[ ]?off[ ]?point)([s]?)", "aim-off point$2"); I've searched the blogs, reviewed K. Daube's Find/Change PDF, and tried various syntax combinations, without luck. Any help much appreciated.
Some specifics: I have run-in head paragraph tags used throughout the book going from Level1Tag1Run all the way to Level6Tag 3Run (and maybe beyond), and most of them have a line after it (FederalRegistry) which has In Column formats. I have styles set up for this item (FedLevel2Tag1, etc) but the file that I was sent has every instance of that item coming in with FederalRegistry and not the correct Level tags. Is there a way to automate a global change so that whenever that kind of tag is following, say, a Level3 paragraph tag, that it switches to the FedLevel3 tag? Is that something I would need Extend Script to do? Or is that beyond automation? (Attached image key: Yellow Highlight is Level5Tag1Run, Blue Highlight is FederalRegister but SHOULD be FedLevel5Tag2)
Having answered xxx successfully I became insecure about the process and tested the situation again. I had observed the following since years (windows XP up, FM-8 up to 16), but now I want to find a solution/reason. I have not yet tested in full the new feature "last line indent" - the demos are controversioal for me. Expecting more than one line for items in generated lists i have > 1 TABs between the <$paratext> and <$pagenum> element on the reference page. When the list (e.g TOC) is generated and I look at it, the TABs seem not to be used at all (in this screenshot it is only one TAB): Refreshing the screen, re-generating the list - does not change anything. No I select the TAB and enter one manually: → The TAB has expanded. See the same effect in a list where I have 3 TABs provided to cope with even more lines: → Why are the generated TABs not expanded in line 2…n ?
Hi all, On one Windows 10 computer, which just happens to be my Visual Studio development system, I have both FrameMaker 2019 and 2020 installed. When I right mouse click in File Explorer and choose Open with, the two FrameMaker options are identical, as shown below. As identified the top choice is actually 2020. The registry entry for .fm, shows what I would expect to see, as shown below. The FM16.FrameMaker.Document classid points to 2020 as expected, and is proven by clicking on the top entry from Open with. The Open with menu has the correct details on another identical Windows 10 computer where I just installed the same 2020 package, as shown below. On my main development computer, also Windows 10, where I have installed and uninstalled various versions of 2020, and now installed 2022, the Open with details are perfect! I have tried resetting the icon and thumbnail caches as discussed in these two articles:How to reset the icon cache database on Window
We have a situation in the company where we translate into 9 languages. Those in charge have determined that the language code must appear in the source files for the book, and our translation team currently has to:Rename the book file with the language code replacing EN for English.Open the book file, and all files in the book.Select and rename each file in the book with the language code, allowing FrameMaker to update all x-refs.Close and same the files and book. The format of our filenames is, for example, Template002EN01-01-Title.fm where the EN represents English, and would be replaced with ZH for Chinese.Does there exist a scrit that one could execute from within FrameMaker after opening the book and files that would take as input a code to replace for EN and rename the files in an automated batch?
