Over the decades, I've come to think that two of my main purposes in life are to (a) push InDesign to the limits and beyond (Slower than molasses in February! Freeze! Crash!), and then (b) get help from the experts on this forum on how to deal with it. This is the third in a series entitled "InDesign Best Practices" in which I hope to give back to the forum, specifically to newbies like I was, with the benefit of my painful experiences. And, as usual, to probably get some corrections and additions from the real experts on this forum.  Note that the title is not just "Long Documents." I put that there because I think people may search on that term. But if you have a long document that is just text, without any crosslinks, hyperlinks, or linked graphics, you probably won't have much in the way of the (Slower than molasses in February! Freeze! Adobe InDesign crashes when trying to place text automatically.       

Sometimes, I'm working in InDesign on my 40" ultrawide monitor at home. Sometimes, I'm working whilst traveling using my 14" laptop screen. When I'm working on my laptop, I would really, really, REALLY like to be able to edit my document without having to scroll WAY right and WAY up to get to the next odd page. I would like to view the spreads as a single-page column, just for easy of editing. I want to be able to simply scroll up and down to review and edit, like in Acrobat. I don't want the document to BE single page spreads, I just want to be able to scroll smoothly downwards on my laptop to review and edit a document. Is this possible? If not, is this worth a feature request?

Hey all. First time here.So, the selection tool isn't working. I use it to click on an element, and it gives me the big 'NO' symbol (circle with the line through it), and I can't move the element. When I hover over the element, it shows a box  with dots around it and the selection tool.I've deleted the app, reinstalled; deleted and reinstalled an earlier version. Searched commentary and now it is day four and I've given up. I've popped in a quick video ...Any help would be really appreciated.ThanksGab

Hello, I want to change the height of  a text frame to a fixed value in mm, anchoring the text frame from top center.No changes in width of text frame. Please suggest a code.Thanks and regards.

I am making a study guide and each question has an text box with discussion points which is an anchored object. I have to place the object and then go through all the steps to modify the options for the anchored objects... there are dozens and dozens of these objects. It would be nice if the options could be copied with the object or if a "style" of options could be made and then applied to the objects.

Ich arbeite mit der aktuellsten InDesign-Version 20.1 x64 auf zwei Monitoren und habe meine Bedienfelder auf dem Zweitmonitor angeordnet. Leider ist die Funktion der Bedienfelder dort seit einigen Updates erheblich eingeschränkt. So lassen sich z. B. im Farbfeldfenster keine Farben durch Ziehen eines Farbfelds auf den Plus-Button duplizieren. Die gleiche Einschränkung besteht im Ebenenfenster (kein Duplizieren/Löschen von Ebenen durch Ziehen auf den Plus- bzw. Löschen-Button, kein Verschieben von Elementen durch Ziehen des Punktes rechts auf eine neue Ebene) sowie auch im Seitenfenster (Ebenfalls kein Duplizieren und Löschen durch Ziehen möglich).Wenn ich die Bedienfelder auf den Hauptmonitor ziehe, funktioniert alles einwandfrei.        Hat jemand eine Idee für eine Lösung?

We know that every time the scripts are reinstalled, or the scripts name changes.The shortcuts set for the script will not work and you will have to set them.My shortcuts File look like this: C:\Users\adm\AppData\Local\Adobe\InDesign\Version 19.0-J\zh_CN\Caches\myshortCut.txtC:\Users\adm\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\InDesign\Version 19.0-J\zh_CN\InDesign Shortcut Sets\myshortCut.indk My scripts are stored in D:\Program Files\ID about\JS\Then, in C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe InDesign 2024\Scripts\Scripts Panel\Samples\Created JS.likI thought of a way to use ID's script to modify the shortcut file myshortCut.indk( maybe myshortCut.txt), to realize the setting of script shortcuts.Take "Counter words【Ctrl+Alt+W】.jsx( or jsbin)" as an example:As long as the  storage path are not changed,  then read the Ctrl+Alt+W】section and write to myshortCut.indk to modify it.There is no 【】 will not need to set. Thank you very much.

After my PC was autoupdated to InDesign 2023, I lost my version 16.4 which is critical to align with an InDesign 2021 Server. When I choose to install an older version, it only goes back to version 17.0. Is there a way I can install my old version 16.4?

Hello everyone, I am setting up an archiving NAS containing all completed work.I am wondering about the viability of the files in the long term (and after multiple Adobe updates), especially the .indd filesCan opening .indd files created with a much older version of inDesign cause problems?If so, what kind of problems?How can I avoid it? On old files, I have already noticed that inDesign offers to "convert" the file to open it with the latest version of inDesign, but I do not know if this is a reliable solution or if some files risk becoming completely unusable despite everything.Does systematically saving a copy of my .indd files in .idml format have any interest?I do not understand these .idml files and their use, but I have read that .idml files have better compatibility between versions. Maybe I'm asking too many questions and a simple .indd record is enough, but I'd like to be sure to do something clean and sustainable. Thanks 🙂

Hello,I have a document where all the pages and parents are the same size, but when I try to apply a parent page to any page I get the message below.• Why am I getting this spurious message ?• Is there some preference setting to avoid this message ?• Is there some preference setting to have a document that has only 1 page size ?This spurious message is interrupting scripts and plugins trying to apply a master page.Very best regards,Olivier 

Why won't my caption setup update after I've  chosen which caption I want?

I have a script that I often use repeatedly while using the Find/Change dialogue in the UI. The script makes some text substitutions in the document, and because it uses the application’s FindTextPreferences for this, the Find/Change dialogue is also updated in the UI. This is kind of annoying, because then I have to reset it and enter the search criteria I was using every time the script is run. I figured this would be easy to fix; just do this:  var initialPreferences = app.findTextPreferences; app.findTextPreferences = NothingEnum.NOTHING; // do rest of stuff here app.findTextPreferences = initialPreferences;  Unfortunately, that doesn’t work – the variable value appears to be assigned by reference, so every time I change anything app.findTextPreferences, the variable is also updated. The FindTextPreference class doesn’t have duplicate() method. Is there a way to store an immutable ‘snapshot’ of the preferences that I can then use to reset the Fi

Hello Community, I stumpled upon a problem with a pixel image I placed to Indesign. The Logo has a transperncy which is dispalyed incorrect. It happens when I import as psd and png. When I open the Logo in Photoshop it looks fine. Attached you find screenshots.  _01 is in InDesing and _02 in Photoshop. What can I do?

I'm working in InDesign 20.1 on a mac.I'm noticing two related things happening. (1) I have two versions of the same document. I was copying some older content into a newer version, same styles exist in both. When I paste the content into the second version, it doesn't retain the style, it all goes back to basic paragraph. (2) Also, when in the document, I noticed that I'm working in the bibliography, with created "bibliography" style. I needed to add another entry, so I placed cursor at the end of an entry (I can see that unaltered "bibliograhy" style is highlighted in Paragraph styles). Then I hit return to go to a new line and the style jumps to my "body text" style in the dialog box, before I even paste anything. I've never had these things happen before, but it is wasting time and creating potential inconsistencies. Thx.

HI there,I am having issues when using the selection tool to move a content box, usually i could select it, then drag and drop in to place, however now when I try to move the box it will jump to the left of the pointer and I have to awkwardly drag it to position. I hope I have explained this well enough.... any help would be much appreciated.

Hello Adobe world!I have to create an animated "how to" page in InDesign. Therefore, I have to make appear an arrow with a small text on a part of the scree, leave it for a few seconds, then remove it for the next topic. The trouble is that I can only make it appear through an animation, put can't make more on the same object...Any idea?Have a great day!Christian

Everytime I create a new document in InDesign, the underline text STYLE is always on. This is not a text RULE or a HYPERLINK - this is the text STYLE feature. I've tried every trick I can think of (opening a new doc and turning it off, closing the doc with it off, etc...) to turn it off but it will not turn off. If anyone can help me - I would be your bff forever. And while we're on a related subject - is there anyway to set the program so it always opens a new document with the SAME settings all the time? I do a lot of different projects so when the defaults remain from the last document I used - it doesn't help at all with a new document - it actually creates more work for me because I have to turn all these things off again. This doesn't seem to exist in InDesign which is kind of strange since every other program of Adobe's seems to work that way. Any help I can get would be great - thanks.

I am working with InDesign 2025 on a macbookair OS 14.7.1 I have layout document for one of my books that was created some years ago by a designer. I believe they may have been using Quark at that time. I was able to open the file with InDesign 2025 and everything looks as it should be except for one thing. The book is in Japanese and was laid out originally with the text in vertical orientation. Opened now in ID, the vertical line format is correct but the text is facing sideways instead of vertically. Is it possible to change the text direction in an existing document?

Attaching screenshots of a given chapter of a book; one in the Kindle app and one in the Apple Books app. In the Kindle, it shows both "Twenty-Two" above the title and then the number 22 prior to the chapter title. In Apple books, the numerical 22 isn't shown. Why would this be? I'm trying to have the chapter numbers spelled out above the chapter title, but then in the TOC have the chapters numbered like: 1. [Chapter 1 title]2. [Chapter 2 title] This is a reflowable epub.

Hi,I have tried to google the matter but cannot find the answer anywhere. I simply want to view my pages touching each other top against bottom so they form one continuous row. Is this possible somehow.I have gone to preferences-guides and pasteboards and set the vertical margin to 0, but the marked spacing is still there.Please see attached screenshot with spacing I want to remove marked in a red rectangle.
