graphic help!

im trying to put a a picture from google of the silhouette of California on my artboard but I want to change the color of the silhouette and also change the opacity and I want to remove all the white around the image as well since it comes with white because its from google. in photo shop I would use the magic want to erase everything around the black which would be the white and than use the paint bucket to fill it in however want. trying to do the same on illustrator or is the whole point of all of them working together for me to do it on photoshop and than bring it into illustrator?

    It sounds like it would be easier to do what you want in Photoshop then import that into Illustrator.

    In Illustrator you could use Image Trace, then Expand to change the image so it is possible to more easily remove the white area from your image.

    Another way to do this.

    Import the image into Illustrator.  In the Layers change it to a template.  Then create a new layer.... then you can trace it with the pen tool, pencil tool or brush tool.

    Here is an example.  I took a photo of a drawing and brought it into Illustrator.  I then changed the drawing into a template layer.  So it was easy to trace it using the pencil tool and then adjust the points as needed.

    TRACE is great, but sometimes it leads to wonky looking images.  This is why I do it all by hand with the pencil tool.  I do this constantly.  You can see more examples in my portfolio.

    I love Illustrator!!!! And it is now part of my everyday work!  It was hard to push myself away from Photoshop and get into Illustrator... I was the biggest Photoshop Fanboy!  But then once I really got into Illustrator I loved it.... as vectors are scaleable!!!!!  They do not lose resolution!

    And it sounds like you are on track trying to create this type of image in Illustrator.

    Photoshop meant to work with images. Selecting, Isolating, improve colors etc...

    Illustrator is a vector based program, you can change opacity and work with blending mode and eliminate background with Opacity mask but I wont recommend it for daily workflow.

    Options:

    Place the layered image in Illustrator...

    Place the PS image, use image trace, Expand the trace and eliminate the background.
