I believe in a more Canadian Canada, but not in my American ID dictionary

My dictionary insists on reverting to "French Canadian" no matter how often I select "American English" as the preferred language. I've selected "American English" in the character menu and in the dictionary menu, but it immediately goes back to "French Canadian." This means that every English word is unrecognized. As far as I know I never requested this language (which I do not speak, much less write in). I'm using InDesign CC 13.01 on a MAC High Sierra.

It is in fact "English USA" throughout, but the dictionary still reverts to French Canadian.

Also, you can change the language in all styles using this script.

The language is a property of the style and the paragraph. Each paragraph can be different so unless you select text before changing it in paragraph settings you aren't changing anything. If you want to change it globally change the style applied throughout. And change the styles before you start a document.

Check your paragraph styles.

Check the paragraph styles for what? I don't see anything about a dictionary in paragraph styles. I have not encountered the problem before.

The paragraph styles list "American English." I don't understand WHY the sudden insistent change to
"Canadian French" which I certainly never asked for. Thanks for the script, which I'll try.

As Test Screen noted language is a character setting and not a document or application setting. You want language to be a character attribute if you have a document with different languages—you might have english text with an excerpt in french, or a french english dictionary.

Did you select all text before changing the language?

Do you mean every text box throughout the document? It's a magazine, so there are many separate articles/text boxes.
