Lightroom Not automatically creating .xmp files

In the past few months I have noticed that Lightroom Classic no longer creates .xmp files automatically even after develop changes have been made. I have "automatically write changes into .xmp” selected within the catalog settings. In order to create the .xmp files, I have to manually create them using “save metadata”.

Yes, I know that the edits are stored within the catalog but, should I move folders in windows explorer rather (My workflow requires that I do) than move within lightroom, I lose the edits. I’m not looking for a workaround or to change my process, just trying to figure out how to have Lightroom automatically create .xmp files containing my edits as it has in the past.

Currently I am on the latest version, 14.0.1 but, this issue was present on the recent version as well.
Photo files in question are .cr3

Any ideas?

It is always very problematic and faulty to move photos that have been imported into Lightroom outside of Lightroom, e.g. in Windows Explorer or Finder (MacOS). This should definitely be done in Lightroom. I also see no reason why it cannot be done in Lightroom. Moving in Lightroom has the same effect on the file system as in Explorer or Finder.

Perhaps you could briefly describe your workflow so that we have a better understanding of it.

One thing to be aware of: In recent versions of LR, it won't automatically write the .xmp sidecar of a photo that's currently open in Develop. You have to switch out of Develop or select another photo in Develop, and then LR will write the sidecar.

This may not be your issue -- there have been lots of complaints about LR writing sidecars in the past year or so, after Adobe tried to "improve" it.

Incorrect, you lose nothing. You have to reconnect the photos after you move them. See https://www.computer-darkroom.com/lr2_find_folder/find-folder.htm

I don't know why LrC isn't creating .xmp files for you.

Youre not wrong but, in my scenario, the edits are lost. I have already syncd the previous parent folder to "remove missing photos" as well as synced to import them in the new parent folder.

Thanks for providing that link, no solutions but, I was able to find a little information within there.
