Question

MP4 issues in Photoshop v27.6. When I open a video file in PS it just shows up blank. I'm able to open and play the video through apps like Quicktime and VLC.

Whenever I try to open a video file in Photoshop, the file just shows the blank white and gray grid background. The Timeline opens but when I push play, no image/video appears.

I’m working in Photoshop 2026 v27.6. I’ve uninstalled and reinstalled the app. I’ve resent all my info. I’ve even used the Creative Cloud Cleaner tool. Still no fix.

I’m glad I tried to open my mp4 with Ps Beta 27.8 (it seemed fine when it opened), because Ps 27.6 suggested that I trash my “possibly-malware-ridden” file, which didn’t open.

On a whim, I tried to open another mp4 in Ps 2026. It opened, no problem.

    Both files are H.264/MPEG-4 AAC.

mp4 is not a video format in itself but is a container for video and audio. To read the file format within it you need a matching codec. The best bet as advised by Ken below is to open it with a convertor utility such as Handbrake, check what format has been used for the video, and convert it to H.264.

    Hi @Giddy_Essence2115\

Sorry to hear about this experience, and thanks for sharing all the troubleshooting steps you've already tried. To help narrow this down, could you share a few more details?

    • Does this happen with every video file, or only certain ones?
    • If you create a brand-new Photoshop document and import a video (Layer → Video Layers → New Video Layer from File), does the same thing happen?
    • What operating system and version are you using?
    • Did this begin immediately after updating Photoshop to v27.6, or after any OS/GPU driver update?
    • Can you please copy and paste the System Info from the Photoshop Help menu?

    •

Also, under: Photoshop → Settings/ Edit > Prefernces → Performance

      Is “Use Graphics Processor” enabled?

    • If you temporarily disable “Use Graphics Processor” and restart Photoshop, does video playback work?
    • Do you see any error messages at all when opening the video, or does it simply stay on the white/gray checkerboard background?
    • Finally, if possible, could you test with a very small/simple MP4 file (H.264 encoded) and let us know whether that works differently?

These details should help determine whether the issue is related to video decoding or a GPU acceleration issue in Photoshop 27.6.

The first thing I’d do is re-encode it to H.264 using Media Encoder (or HandBrake).
