finishing in 1080. better to scale up 1080 clips to match the 4k ones, or the other way around?

So I'm cutting 1080 and 4k clips. So i'll finish in 1080. My questions is: is it better to work in a 4k timeline, scale up the 1080 clips to match the 4k ones, and then just export at 1080? Or should I work in a 1080 sequence, downscale the 4k's to fit in the 1080 sequence, and then export to 1080 from there? My thinking is that if I work in a 1080 sequence, with downscaled 4k clips, that at least for those 4k clips, I would then have the extra resolution to zoom into those clips if needed, while having that "extra" resolution to spare. Just curious about general thoughts on best practices in a scenario like this.

Scaling up always means image quality loss.

So yes 4K in a 1080p sequence is the way to go with clips set to SET to Framesize.

    Thanks @Ann Bens! I've done some poking around and I think I've found the functionality that you mention. I inserted a 4k clip into the timeline, then right clicked on it inside the timeline, and clicked Set to Framesize. I see that it did the calculations for me (by of course scaling it down 50%) under scale in Effect Controls.

     

    Is there a way to tick some setting on so this done automatically whenever I insert clips into the timeline that don't fit the sequence frame size?
