Is After Effects the only kind of program that will do that or is there any other software ?

I'm interested in After Effects because I want to eliminate a background and make it green screen.  Is After Effects the only kind of program that will do that or is there any other software ?

why is it so hard to get a straight answer to something so simple to ask ?  My video has a background, I want to eliminate it to green screen solid color.  There must be some software that does that without all the rest of the editing tools I don't need.

It's not really a simple thing.  Read Rick's posts thoroughly.

You are confused.  The reason you're feeling the answers are overly complicated is because you lack basic knowledge of compositing and of After Effects.   It's like someone buying a calculator and then going online and asking "how do I start one of those company's that counts peoples monies?"  And then complaining that the answers are too complicated,

A green screen is something you shoot on...then you key it in a video editing or compositing software to create transparency in which you can insert a background.  There are no software that take a moving background and convert it to green screen because there be no point in doing that..if anything it would just create transparency.   What YOU want to learn is rotoscoping.   As Rick already explained to you.

So the problem is not that "nobody" is able to give you a simple answer.

The problem is that you don't understand how compositing works & you don't know what a green screen is.

It's like math...if you do not learn basic addition and subtraction first, then you will never be able to understand algebra.

You're cofused, Gutterfish. I want to 'transparent' a video's background so I can use it in another video background I want to change it to. My post has been and still is if any other software can make a transparency of a 'MOVING VIDEO' ?

Do you want to shoot on greenscreen and then replace the background or do you want to separate something from a normal background? One operation is called keying, and After Effects, Premiere Pro, Final Cut, Fusion and a bunch of other apps will do keying. The more specialized the app, like After Effects or Fusion, the more control you will have when creating the matte (transparency). If you are talking about removing an ordinary background then that is called Rotoscoping. Some NLE's have that feature in a limited way, but most of the time you need a separate app for that. After Effects is good at that.

If you choose to learn After Effects expect to spend a couple of hundred hours learning about the UI, the workflows, video formats, compression, video standards, the principals of animation, and about a hundred other things. You will be completely lost if you just open up AE and start poking around. It's about 1000 times more complex than Photoshop and you can get lost very easily.

first, I want to convert a video with motion that has a background to green screen.  I don't need help with a photograph, that's simple.  I want to know if any other software can remove a video with motion background to green screen besides Adobe.

T here would be no reason to change the background to greenscreen unless you want the final video to have a green background. The reason to shoot video against a solid colored background is so you can remove that background. That process is called rotoscoping. Here's a simple short demo of Roto by hand using After Effects:

After Effects, and many other visual effects apps have this ability. If your footage is shot with the right kind of background After Effects has another tool you can use called Rotobrush.  This tool will automate the process but it WILL NOT work with all shots. The shot in the Simple Roto demo is not a candidate for Rotobrush because the Dog is the same color as the carpet and no automatic solution is available. You have to carefully plan and shoot with automated rotoscoping (Rotobrush) in mind. All roto operations are time-consuming and not nearly as accurate as shooting with on a green, or any other suitable color, background. Green is very common because it is fairly easy to remove the green spill from flesh tones. Blue, red, and purple can also easily be used with people. Shooting greenscreen footage also requires a great deal of skill and a visually lossless format. That means that you really need professional equipment if you want to do a really good job. Footage from a smartphone or consumer camera may bet you by, but for really good work you need 10 bit visually lossless footage that is properly exposed.

Here's a little info on how to use Rotobrush: Roto Brush and Refine Matte in After Effects - Adobe Help.  It is not an easy tool to use effectively. You have to study the user guide to have any hope of success. After Effects is also not the only software that has this kind of tool.

Wow, that's what I've been asking. My video has motion and I want to eliminate the background to green so I can make another background for it. That's why I'm asking about this. This is not a photograph either, I know how to do that without Affect Effects already.

You don't need the background green. You need it transparent.

is this thru After Effects and not some other programs ? I use VideoPad and the transparency doesn't eliminate the background, only makes it 'transparent'.

Green/Blue screens are used on a sound stage so everything they film has a green background! Once the filmed footage is brought into After Effects or another program the "green" background can be easily keyed out (removed), leaving a transparency into which a background can be inserted.  Do you understand?

A "green screen" is not something created in ANY software.  It's something used during the FILMING process.

THERE IS NO PROGRAM THAT AUTOMATICALLY REMOVES BACKGROUNDS!!

To remove a background from a video you need to ROTOSCOPE!!!!!!!!!

so here is a simple answer to your question.

if any other software can make a transparency of a 'MOVING VIDEO' ?

There are other software solutions for rotoscoping. The problem is that they are expensive. There is no automatic solution. Exporting the video as an image sequence then removing the background from each image in Photoshop but that would be extremely time-consuming and it would be incredibly difficult to create smooth edges on moving subjects.

You are trying to do something that is difficult and very time-consuming even when carefully planned and using the best software available.

You're wasting your time Rick.  They're not interesting in rotoscoping.  They want to create a green screen so they can replace it.

They just posted another duplicate question asking the same question again and explicitly stating they're not interested in rotoscoping.

I know I'm wasting time. Even if he wants to create a green screen it still requires $$$ and Time. There is no automatic solution. The OP is probably a kid that thinks the world owes him an automated solution to any problem he has.

wrong on everything.  I'm 53 and my sister was MURDERED in 1983.  I want to make a green screen like Obama's video to eliminate the background.  How can they do this for him and you say OHH, it's completely a waste of time.

then what you are saying is that those who post YouTube videos with green screen from motion pictures like War of the Worlds did them from some program that costs more than After Effects ?

When you see footage with greenscreen shots the actors are in a studio with a green screen background. Here's a shot from the set of Sherlock in Bristol.

stream_img.jpg

Here's a sequence showing visual effects breakdowns:

The green is not added in post, the green backgrounds are placed in the shot to make it easier to cut out the foreground elements.

There is absolutely no practical reason to take an ordinary shot and paint the background green. You are asking for software to do something that is a complete waste of time.
