I have issued a contract for 2 people to sign. One of the individuals has told me when he opens the contract he is being forced to sign for both parties.

When trying to send the document for signing, you need to select the name of the signer under Role label to decide who needs to sign.

After selecting both signers for both the fields, it won't ask the same signer to sign for both parties.
