AE 2023 Preview freezing everytime

New Here ,
Feb 21, 2023 Feb 21, 2023

Hi,

My assistant and I intstalled AE 2023 and now have a major issue : The preview freezes after a few secondes/minutes of using the software (on both of our computers.)

It's a total freeze of the preview image (the rest of the software is still responding) at a certain point in the timeline.

Nothing to do but closing the software when it happens, and it happens every 30s to me currently, so it's impossible to work.
GPU drivers are updated, we already tried to clear Disk caches and Database media caches.

We dont know what to do. Does someone have a hint ?

my specs :

CPU : I7-10875

RAM : 32GO DDR4

GC : Nvidia RTX 2070

OS :Windows 11 Pro 64bit

AE  v23.2.0

Thankssss god for your sending you to earth to make this comment !
My AE project was driving me nut because whenever I import a video, no matter what codec it is, will make the program freeze. I could not save the project or preview my timeline.
For anyone who looking for a solution, this might be it. Go to Memory & Performance ---> Uncheck "Enable Multi-Frame Rendering" box.

Hi Alexandre25979675lblx,

We can get this checked.

Could you share the system specs of the other computer? We'll try to find the the common components and reproduce the issue at our end. Does it happen with a particular project? Also, what's the version of Nvidia driver you're using?

Moving this thread from Bugs to Discussions for troubleshooting.

We're here to help.

Thanks,

Nishu

Thanks for sharing the details. Please try this:

  1. Go to File > Project Settings > change the renderer to Mercury Software Only.
  2. If that doesn't help, go to After Effects Preferences > Display > uncheck Hardware Accelerated Composition, Layer, and Footage Panels and clear cache (Edit > Perge > All Memory & Disk Cache).
  3. Restart After Effects.

Let us know how it goes.

Thanks,

Nishu

Now we are really afraid to update Adobe programs. Even though I tried what you said, the freezing problems still persist. The system I use ; Macbook M1Max 64 GB Ram ! You are no longer able to support our workflow, so sorry...

Hello,
I ran into the same problem - the Composition Preview playback works for the first minutes and then stops working and the Preview freezes to the current frame. The Software keeps running and responding.
After restarting AE, it works again for some minutes until the Preview freezes.
Thank you for your help!

My new method is to use after effects latest version beta. In the beta version, these problems have been reduced a lot. You can download beta application from Creative cloud.

I could resolve the issue by uninstalling (AE v23.2.1) and reinstalling After Effects (23.3.0 - without importing the former program settings). Just updating did not do the trick.
So probably I just screwed some settings.
