Whenever I use after effects for more than a short time this message starts appearing. It's hard to close and eventuallt the ae crashes. I've been constantly doing edit/purge and using fast draft and quarter resolution, but it still appears. Any other suggestions?

Without any exact and specific info about your project, your computer, effects used and so on nobody can tell you anything.

ok, well this is the computer. It seems to happen when there are quite a few layers in a project or even just two or three effects. For example, above I put in a wave distortion and copied it a few times and then it started happening. Also, it happens all the time when using DUIK.

Sounds like a mundane graphics driver issue then, to be honest. Update your driver and check your hardware acceleration settings every where. You may also want to check for other stuff like perhaps a damaged or "bad" font you may have added to your system. Even with no visible text layers, the mere usage in the UI could cause issues.
