We have just released a fix for the After Effects CC (12.0) crash on Mac OS X v10.9 (Mavericks):
http://adobe.ly/AE_CC_1201_Mavericks
IMPORTANT: The After Effects CC (12.0.1) update fixes a crash on Mac OS X (v10.9). There is no need to install this update on any other operating system. After Effects CC (12.1) is coming soon for all operating systems and includes this same fix plus many more features and bug fixes.

Any update on when the 12.1 update may be released?
I understand Mavericks is not out yet, but i'm kind of annoyed that a fix was released for the older version (CS6) and not the newer one that we pay a monthly fee for. Wasn't one of the whole points of the subscription based model that you can ship out updates faster? Is it that big of a difference fixing AE CC to work without implementing the full 12.1 update?
Again, I understand Mavericks isn't out yet, and there's no real obligation to support it. It's also great that Adobe is supporting an older version of their product. But what about those of us who upgraded to the newer version that actually has a monthly fee attached to it? There are some good things in 12.1, but right now it would be nice if 12 just ran, like 11 now does.

We still intend to have an update for After Effects CC (12) out for Mac OS 10.9 before the OS is released.

You all realize that the OS is shipping next Tuesday right? You keep saying "before the OS is released". That gives you 2 business days. So which is it going to be?
I don't care that the OS isn't released yet, the fact that you completely stop ANY use of the product is completely ludicrous! I paid for this product and I damn well should be able to use it! If not, then I deserve at least a partial refund! I'll take the crashes and expect updates as soon as you can, but the fact that I can't even use it at all is completely unacceptable!

This update is only available as a manual download (not through the Creative Cloud automatic update mechanism) to prevent users on versions of Mac OS X other than v10.9 (Mavericks) from installing it unnecessarily.
Adobe After Effects CS6 (11.0.3) was released a little while ago with this fix, plus fixes for many other crashes and bugs. Details: http://adobe.ly/AE_CS6_1103

I tried to use the 12.0.1 patcher, but it keeps telling me that "this patch is not applicable" for me.
Am I alone with this?

Be sure that you are not using After Effects in free trial mode. The update will not work if you are running a free trial version.

I was using it signed into CC. Signed out, back in again, now it appears to work.
Thanks

I may have a solution:
I've followed all the steps above and had a few hours of help from Adobe Support, but ultimately it wasn't working: then I googled the strange phrase about the update being “suppressed by the Administrator” and found this page:
http://forums.adobe.com/message/4758115
and followed this advice:
I found the problem is due to AAME installing a pref file which DISABLES updates from working in CS products. TheAdobeUpdaterAdminPrefs.dat file. This is quite a pain and
someone installing Adobe CS with AAME may not be aware that this file is being installed, making it very confusing for administrators.
The solution is to delete or rename the <Startup Disk>/Library/Application Support/Adobe/AAMUpdaterInventory/1.0/AdobeUpdaterAdminPrefs.dat
----------------------------------------
Then I ran the patch and it has worked!
So it looks like the problem pre-dates Mavericks...

I'm glad that you found that, Tim, and it is certainly something that others who get the same error message should try... but this should not be common, since AAMEE is enterprise deployment software, so most folks shouldn't encounter this.

Tim's fix does not work for me. With CC you do not have the same folder or file names and by moving and/or deleting the similar files I still get the same error message. It recreates the file "AdobeUpdaterPrefs.dat" immediately.

I recommend contacting Adobe Technical Support, or having your IT people do so:

If you’re not using a trial version, but you’re seeing the message that the update is not applicable, try this to force the application to be recognized as activated:
Signing out of and back into Creative Cloud can refresh the activation state. Also, launching the After Effects render engine (not the full After Effects application) can refresh the activation; the render engine doesn’t have the crashing problem that the full unpatched application does. In some cases, uninstalling and then re-installing After Effects may be necessary. Be sure to restart your computer after an uninstallation or re-installation.

The After Effects CC (12.1) update that comes out tomorrow can be used to patch the trial version, and it also works on Mac OS X v10.9 (Mavericks):

First of all, the trial works on every current OS except Mavericks which was just released. The point of the 12.0.1 update is so that paying customers wouldn't have to wait. Paid customers have a working version and tomorrow Adobe will be releasing an update to AE (12.1.0) that will make the trial work for Mavericks too.
Please have some patience; it is coming. If you're going to be an early adopter of a brand new OS, you have to expect there to be some issues here and there. It is the price you pay. If you're on the cutting edge, you will sometimes get cut. This is why many professional post houses are still running old versions of software on old operating systems. The current setup works and they don't have a break in their schedule that will let them test a new setup.
