After Effects Layer Panel

I can not get my layer to show in the layer panel of my composition in after effects, therefore I can not use the clone stamp tool. Anyone know why the layer does not show up? The layer is visible, and is active.

What kind of layer is it? Is it a video/image? What happens when you double-click it? What's the version of After Effects you're using?
