After Effects taking up 90% of my memory and slowing down my pc

Hi everybody,

My After Effects slows down my pc for the last 2 days out of nowhere. When I playback the video it renders 1 frame at the time. I think it is because it takes no matter what I do 90% of my memory, without doing anything special on it. I've tried most solutions on this forum yet no change. I was always able to play it back in 'full' and now it has a hard time playing a third. Obviously very annoying. even when writing this and AE in the backstory it is lagging. I have this problem 2 days now and I'm at an internship so it really sucks.

my spec:

1050TI 2gb

8GB Ram

Windows 10 64bit

i7 7700hq 2.80ghz

There's not much information to go on here, but if you were working at Full resolution with no problem previously, then it probably wasn't a very heavy comp. Are you working on a different comp that's more processor intensive?

Things that would be helpful to troubleshooting this:

1) Hardware setup, in addition to what you already provided: Do you have a separate drive for caching, and is it an SSD or HDD? What is your app running off of, and what are your project files running off of?

2) Is your cache drive full?

3) Full screenshots of the comp you're trying to render. Screen recordings are also helpful.

4) Are you working in 3D? If so, do you accidentally (or intentionally) have the Cinema 4D renderer selected, rather than the Classic 3D one? This can slow things down greatly.

After Effects doesn't handily play back much in real time and in full res, so you need to provide much more info. A project file could help too.

Thank you for you response.

1) Adobe is completely on my 250Gb ssd with ~30gb free, Adobe has 15Gb cache assigned from me. It is AE 2018 latest update. The save files are on my hdd.

2)^

3) It is literally just a comp with a video in it. it does it with every project, heavy or not, so I feel like it has to do something with the settings. The video is 15 seconds long with a 1920x1080 res.

4) It's not a 3d project, just 2d. Just classic 3d renderer.

Hope this gives a little more insight on it. Thanks

I have the problem since I recreated this tutorial Colorful Glitch FX Tutorial! 100% After Effects! - YouTube , in the project it was lagging but I found that normal as it had some heavy graphics on there for my laptop. But I then created some other projects and they had it aswell.

Thank you for all that detail. The last post was actually helpful and I see the problem now.

You're working in 32bpc, which you turned on because of the VCP tutorial (for a better glow). Go to the Project panel and switch back to 8bpc and you should have faster playback.

it seems to be much much better, but it still takes 50% of my memory and some like 30% disk usage. So it still makes my pc lagg sometimes. Not sure if there's anything that you would know of that could help?

You need to move your cache off of your primary drive.   Keeping it there slows everything down and in addition you do not have enough free space.  On a 250 gig Primary you should between 30 to 40 gigs  (about 15%) free at all times.   Get yourself an 80gig ssd drive, they're like $50,  and use it for your disk cache.
