After Effects v.17.5.1 crashing on open screen

I'm on the most current version of After Effects, and it's hanging up on the open screen and crashing every time I open a file. No error message, it just stops responding. I can open and save new files, but I can't open them back up. I've been opening and working on these files as recently as yesterday, and I'm not sure what might have changed. It seems like my system is struggling to open the files and giving up, but they're not particularly complex or heavy files. I've tried reinstalling, installing older versions, and purging the caches to no avail.

I'm on a 2019 HP Spectre 360 w/ an i7, 16G RAM, 512G SSD, and a NVIDIA GeForce MX15. Haven't had access to another computer to try and it test it.

Try the basics, reset Ae's preferences:

Press Alt (Windows) or Option (Mac OS) while launching After Effects. You can release the Alt or Option key when the splash screen appears.

To reset preferences and plug-in cache at the same time, hold down Control-Shift-Alt (Windows) or Command-Shift-Option (Mac OS) while the application is starting. Release the keys when the splash screen appears.

Hi ryandunn,

Sorry for your issue.

Did you try Byron Cortez's suggestion? Did it help? If not, is there a common effect or media that you are using in your projects? Also, have you tried importing your existing projects into a new one?

Let us know how it goes.

Thanks,

Nishu

So many bugs in this version that I cannot believe I'm paying for this.
