Entirely depends on how the fade is created and what the Fade actually refers to. With such a generic question nobody can even guess much. Could be some shy layers with expressions doing the magic, could be something reralted to how essential graphics are rigged. Anyway, your post doesn't tell us anything. You need to be much more specific and provide a screenshot or link to the template for people to have a look.

Fade To Black is usually controlled on the top layer of your main comp. Start there.

I would start by making sure that there are no Shy layers that are not showing in the Main Comp, then press the 'u' key twice to reveal all modified layers and keyframes in the main comp. You might be getting close if you find keyframes or expressions on Opacity layers. Fiddle with the controls until you identify the layers.

If the Template has a lot of nested comps (pre-comps), start with the main comp flowchart (Alt/Option + Ctrl/Cmnd + F11). Expand it and look for layers and effects that might give you a clue to their purpose. If you can't easily find a named or labeled layer, open each nested comp and look for keyframes and expressions on the layers.

Thanks for this Rick! I had the same issue with a template I had downloaded and it turns out that there was a SHY layer controlling the opacity of a black solid. I toggled the shy layers, moved to the time of the fade to black and pressed U which made it very easy to identify which layer had keyframes at that point in time. Once the opacity was corrected, the fade was gone and I could use the template as I had intended. Thanks!
