Can this type of crack-breaking affect be achieved in After effects?

Hi forum.

 

I'd like to know which method using AE effects, this can be achieved. What I'm focusing on is, just an effect which makes animated cracks, I dont need the shatter of an object., just the few seconds of the demo below as the cracks appear is all I need.

You should be able to use Shatter. A custom shatter map, a negative force, and fiddling with gravity and viscosity will do the trick. Then Pre-compose and add time remapping to control the speed. This took about 2 minutes. The timeline shows all modified properties of Shatter.
