Colors changing on export - red reveal

New Here ,
Aug 15, 2025 Aug 15, 2025

Hi all, working on a red reveal style video (red lens glasses reveal cyan objects) and as you can see in the image, the effect works in After Effects (top) but on export (bottom) the pure red has been desaturated which is making the reveal not function properly. Don't know a ton about color spaces or color management so would really appreciate any ideas!

Hi Sarah,

Thanks for writing in. That's a cool looking effect. Can you show us a screenshot of the Coor tab? Choose File > Project Settings > Color Tab. I hope we can assist you. Sorry for the hassle.

Thanks,
Kevin

Thanks for sharing the screenshot. There's nothing that's not normal. Can you help me understand the effect? Is it that you can see the image and text when you look through a red lens? And you've captured the photo in the original post with a red lens in front of the camera lens? Am I correct? To me, it looks like the colors are fine because I can see the content in the exported file, but it has noise. That could be your export settings. Can you try exporting in a different format? Try QuickTime ProRes for testing.

Let us know how it goes.

Thanks,
Nishu

Hi Nishu! Thanks for responding. Yes, you're correct about how the effect works and how I took the photo. I'll try QuickTime ProRes! The vendor has told me that it needs to be H.264 for the final, so I had been leaving it on that.

Tested using ProRes and it still has the visible noise. What would be changing to make the noise visible on export if the output color space is the same as the working color space?

Thanks for getting back. Could you share some details about the project? Which effects are used and how did you achieve this effect? It could be related to export settings. Are you customizing the export settings to control the file size? Do you mind sharing a screenshot of the export settings?

Let me know.

Thanks,
Nishu

Followed this tutorial as a guide: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9bE2GnPDmnE

Essentially the pure red noise layer is set to multiply and the items to be revealed are pure cyan beneath it, the red lens glasses are supposed to filter out the noise and make the cyan items clearly visible.

Didn't change any export settings for the initial photo
