CTI won't move anymore in AE

As of the last few days:

After I press Home and then the spacebar to preview the CTI jumps to wherever I was before pressing home and starts the preview there. It takes at least 2-3 tries for AE to play from the beginning
Also, whenever I press the spacebar or the play button to preview, the CTI won't move so I have no idea where I am while watching. If I press the spacebar to stop, the CTI jumps to where it would have been if it were moving.

This all started out of nowhere a few days ago and has been a constant pain in the ass since. This project could have been done hours ago but I can't do anything like this.

Please someone tell me how to stop this insanity.

UPDATE: The CTI is now moving but none of the audio plays. As soon as I pause or stop the preview, I heard sound for a split second. Like it's taunting me. The layer has audio "on", it's checked under the Preview menu, and I can clearly see waveforms and lips moving.

Hi there,

I understand this is not how it should work. The playback glitches can appear because of many factors. We'll need more information to troubleshoot the issue.

Does it happen with every project?
Have you tested the playback on a different workspace?
Additionally, I'd recommend you to reset the preferences which will make the settings default. https://helpx.adobe.com/in/after-effects/using/preferences.html#reset_prefs
