I have AE set up to open a pre-comp if I double-click on a layer in my timeline. But every once in a while, that function gets flipped while I'm using AE. The program will now open the pre-comp layer into a footage trim window when double-clicked. I have to hold down the option key while double-clicking to get the behavior I prefer.
(And to verify, it is a layer that is a pre-comp, not a naked source footage layer -- which I would always expect to open in a trim/edit/rotobrush window.)
What am I doing to inadvertently reverse my preferred behavior? I haven't opened the preferences to change anything.

Have you tried it in 2017.2?

Hy Parker,
I dont know if this is still relevant for you, but I'll post this for anybody who might stumble upon this problem.
Most likely you have activated a Paint Tool. If those tools are selected/active (right below the menu the icon is blue) After Effects will temporarily go into "Open source at double-click"- mode. You can deactivate this option in the preference menu (General- "Open Layer Panel when Double-clicking with Paint, Roto Brush, and Refine Edge Tools).
Hope this helps.
Cheers

Thanks so much! This helped me a great deal.
I know this is a complex tool and all...but foolish UX decision like this can cost lots of work-time. Not the brightest idea to flip this function.

This could also happen if you have more than one layer selected

I am experiencing this in late 2021. Selection tool selected on widows system. Not sure if occurs on my mac. Seems random. Midly annoying, shutting down and relaunding AE seems to solve it. Been going on a few days. Not that big of deal having to press alt/option Perhaps something is corrupt in my project, yet I've seen this behavior before previously in other projects. Already wasted too much time "talking" about it. Just wanted to post for others or possible solution later someone discovers. Cheers.

So I cannot edit a misspelling in my own post? Ok, well then, why would I even spend time here if I cannot edit my own material?
