I’ve recently migrated from an older Mac to a new Mac Studio M1 Ultra (v 12.4) and have encountered numerous errors related to locating assets or failing to import “damaged or unsupported” assets into AE (v22.6.0). The errors are not exclusive to video files and also seem to happen with images. The attached image is not the only example, but my most common problematic file along with the errors that appear when opening a file. Seeing as it was a template file, it was imported into many projects.
Focusing on the “damaged or unsupported” error; In my template, the original file location is looking for the MOV in “../Template_AV Pickup_r1/(Footage)/2_Assets/Footage/“. Attempting to relink the asset from that “Footage” folder triggers the errors. If I copy the MOV to a different folder, for example “Video”, then it imports and plays fine.
I thought maybe there was an illegal character in the file or folder structure, but the folder structure is a result of an AE Collect and any other illegal characters likely would have caused issues on other computers. I also thought maybe I was missing a codec, but it imports and plays fine if its located in different folders.
For additional info and content, my team uses and works on projects within Dropbox. I’m not the only one with the issue but I think I’m experiencing far more errors since the recent computer upgrade. I believe my general workflow between the two machines is essentially the same with the exception of where I’ve installed Dropbox (v156.4.4908). We try to keep assets within their own project, but often times assets are linked across projects.
I believe the 86::1 error is due to Dropbox not automatically syncing files when a project “touches” a relevant file. AE can’t find the file when its in Dropbox’s “Online Only.” While I’d like to resolve that, I can sorta bypass that error for now by making sure projects are “local”. It only becomes a pain when assets are linked to other projects and I have to figure out which ones to sync locally. The big problem I’d like to fix is the damaged or unsupported file because I have to manually relink assets. On larger projects with many assets that becomes time consuming. Thank you for any help.

Same…
Mac Studio M1-Ultra. Changing the name of a video file that won't inport works, not a feasible workaround. Duplicating a problem file and moving to a different directory both allow After Effects to read the files. Problem files for After Effects work fine in Premiere. I've only tested files sync'd using Dropbox, that are ProRes or MP4, in After Effects 22 and 23 (latest versions) on Mac Studio M1 Ultra running 12.6.
