I've created a character animation system in AE7 with approximately 400 short expressions which connects layers in different comps to a control panel in the mastercomp.
In AE7 everything works smooth and I can animate using point controls connected to the layers via an IK-system. But when I upgraded to CS3, and now CS4 and tried the same projectfile, everything is painfully slow.
Is CS3 and CS4 slower in general when it comes to expressions, or do I have to build the system from scratch with CS4 to get it to work smooth?

No, but probably you are using OpenGL which as of CS4 will also be applied to nested pre-comps, hence there is considerable slowdown, if the number of items exceeds a certain number and they cannot be buffered.

No, I'm not using OpenGL with my animation system and CS4.
