External GPU issue

I am having trouble with After Effects. My laptop is unable to load any clip for more than a second. My laptop is a MacBook Pro 2019 2.4 GHz 8-Core Intel Core i9, 32 GB 2667 MHz DDR4, Intel UHD Graphics 630 1536 MB. It’s been like this since I got it brand new one year ago which is frustrating as my old MacBook Pro 2016 runs After effects much smoother.

I thought maybe the issue was the graphics card, so I purchased an external GPU. (Razor core x with an AMD Radeon RX 6600 XT)

In after effects I can see that it is using the external GPU (preferences, preview, gpu information) and I’ve been into project settings and selected use mercury gpu acceleration Metal

I’ve done as much research as I can but can’t seem to figure out the issue, I’m hoping that I didn’t waste the money on the external GPU.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, I’m not super tech savvy so hopefully the info I’ve provided makes sense.

what do you mean by (My laptop is unable to load any clip for more than a second), Do you mean you can't preview for more than one second? can you post some screenshots or record your screen?, also if you have an MBP 2019 core i9 that means you have a dedicated GPU other than the intel so why do you go with an external GPU?

I think I may have jumped the gun in buying the eGPU. I had a friend tell me that it was because my graphics card wasn't powerful enough and reccomended getting an external GPU.

Show us a screenshot of the timeline and provide info about the actual preview settings along with proper details about your clips. just as much this could be an issue with GPU playback and other hardware accelerated functions it could for instance be an audio issue. Either way, more info is definitely needed.
