I have 2 video streams, One is my actual video, and the other one is a depth map. I have some text and I want it to be hidden as an object passes in front of it in the video. I have the text 3d tracked to the video, but I need it to hide behind an object in the video I've looked for a while and I wasn't able to find any way to do this.
I used the levels effect on my depth matte to create a luma matte that I could use to hide my text.

Do you mean an Alpha Matte or Luma Matte?
Depth Matte is usually for focus.
Alpha channels, masks, and mattes
Scroll down to "Convert a layer into a track matte".

So I have a shot like this with some text added
and I have a depth map and I want to use it to hide the text behind the pillar
The camera is moving and I was wonder if after effects had any way to automatically hide the parts of the text that went behind the pillar.

Firstly, your depth matte doesn't look right. The text in the depth matte should be dark like the other foreground objects, so I'm not sure how this would work.
Secondly, you would need a second version of your main image without the text there at all, so that you can replace the pillar with text with pillar without text.
I think Warren is correct above, you may have more success creating a luma matte from the depth matte image, using masking and levels to isolate the text. But again, without a version of the main image with the text removed, this won't help you remove the text. It might be easier to replace the pillar using a masked duplicate layer, or the clone stamp tool.

I added the text with 3d tracker in the post. Just forgot to remove it. I have the footage without it. How would a luma matte work if the camera was moving back and forth?

To be clear this is the footage that I have:

If you just have the greyscale depth matte then there's not much you can do to create a track matte from the video. You're either going to have to render another pass or do some tracking and masking. We also need to know your complete AE workflow and see your timeline with the modified properties of the layers giving you problems showing. Select the layer, press 'uu' then use the toolbar to embed the screenshot so we can see what's going on. There is nothing automatic you can do with the footage you previewed.
