How do I convert an Illustrator file to 3D in After Effects?

Hi all,
I'm trying to bring an illustrator shape file into After Effects and convert it to 3D so I can give it an extrusion depth.
I've imported the file, added it to a comp with a camera and light, and gone to 'Layer > Create > Create Shapes from Vector Layer'. I am using Cinema 4D as a renderer. As soon as I make the object 3D it disappears from the screen and I get the below error code, 88 :: 3.
I have looked at a few questions here but nothing resolves it. Does anyone know how to fix this? Ideally I want to give the shape some depth and have it move and rotate in 3D.

Check your artwork in AI. This happens when you have bad geometry like self-intersecting outlines or anchor points close to each other, which can happen when you cut and merge shapes and don't clean them up properly. Also consider importing the shapes separately for more control.

Thank you, I've tried cleaning it up and also tried importing just a flat square and getting the same result (object invisible and only very briefly viewable as a wireframe when moving).
