How to get better preview playback

How to get better preview playback, I have tried change the folder to an external HDD for cahce etc

Windows 10 Home 64-bit (10.0, Build 17134) (17134.rs4_release.180410-1804)

Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-6700 CPU @ 3.40GHz (8 CPUs), ~3.4GHz

Memory: 16384MB RAM

Available OS Memory: 16334MB RAM

DirectX Version: DirectX 12

Card name: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070

external hard drive is the wrong way to go for caching. you want an SSD with a direct connection to your motherboard for best performance. Also, which version of AE are you using?

Saying that it was origignally set to a SSD that was attached to the mother board and it was worse

was that SSD the same one that your OS and AE were installed on or a seperate one?

What do you mean by "How to get better preview playback"? What are your issues exactly? Is caching slow? Is playback less than realtime after caching? Is playing back cached frames (blue line along the Timeline) slow?

Only 16gb of RAM, so the memory cache will be very short. After Effects loves RAM, the more the better. High-end editing systems have at least 64gb.
