I am trying tro see just the reference graph but the speed graph is still showing. When I un check the box nothing happens it stays in the graph editor so I am seeing both the reference and speed graphs at the same time. I can hide the reference graph and it should allow me to see just the reference graph or visa versa or both if I want to see both. I am using windows 10 pro and after effects 23.2.1 build 3 which is currently the latest version.
Thanks for your help.

I am not seeing any change in behavior, and I use the graph editor every day. I'm not sure what you are trying to adjust. A screenshot and a workflow description would help.

Hey Rick thanks for getting back to me. Embarasingly I figured it out on my own. I had show reference graph turned on and I was in editing mode for the wrong graph. Once I turned off the reference graph I was able to figure it out. I did struggle with this for a while before I decided to reach out. Whilst I was going about refining my quaundry with screen shots and the sort I did some more fiddling and voila! I was visited by the spirit of minerva and the problem solved it self.
Now I need to figure out how to get bezier handels on the keyframes in value editing mode.
I find the adobe documentation extremley frustrating. You make a query and it brings up every possible reference to your question in every peice of software in the cataloge. I was trying to search within aftrer effects and it gave me 113 diferent wrong answers after I had to re narrow down my search paramerters back to after effects. I dont find the user giude very user freindly. The inmformation is scatered and it lacks an apendix.
If you have any stratagies for dealing with the user giude let me know.
Thanks
P.s I had writen a bit of a rant but decided to roll it back.

Value graphs are useless for Position. They only really work for single-value properties like rotation and time remapping. May be this tutorial will help:
