ideas for fog effect

Explorer ,
Apr 03, 2019 Apr 03, 2019

Hey everyone,

Visually, Fractual Noise makes a pretty good fog effect, but I need it to move like with the wind.

Is there another effect that would work better?

The effect is applied to the main comp for the entire project, isn't defined by any one layer.

Thanks.

I would probably use a gradient filled shape layer (black to white) with Fractal Noise added using the blend mode as a track matte for a fractal noise layer with the blend mode set to screen. The actual fog layer fractal noise would have the Offset Turbulence animated as well as the evolution. Something like this project that I created for a scene that did not have nearly enough battle smoke in it:

That's everything modified in both layers.

The fractal noise in the video looks pretty static. Did you animate any of it's properties?

If this is not appealing, you may create shape layers as rectangles, add a lot of blur and one of the distortion effects (try out which will work best), animate the distortion and maybe move the whole layer. Work with transparency and overlay the fog-shapes to each other.

This is not fast done, but could turn out more realistic.

Thanks...I'll look into this, at first glance I didn't see an animation option on the Fractual Noise preset...

I usually have several layers of Fractal Noise with various levels of detail and scale (and animation) at various depths in my project.
