Layered PSD files not translating correctly when imported in AE

This is pretty vexing, I must admit.  As a motion designer, I have historically done all of my layout and design work in After Effects, and as such I know very little about the intricacies of Photoshop and it's highly non-intuitive workflow (at least, it is far less intuitive than AE to me, which was what fueled my direction).

Currently however, I find myself working with folks who are using a PS workflow, and am encountering problems which confuse me...

Perviously, I have seen that exporting a layered psd file from AE to PS is kind of useless as AE has blending modes that are unsupported by PS.

Today however, I am having something of the opposite problem wherein a layered PSD file imported into AE as a composition with Editable Layered Styles enabled comes in looking very, very different than it looks in PS... in this case, 'glossy' elements are missing, as are some glows, and outlines, again making this 'feature' effectively useless.

It is inconceivable to me that in 2015, when Photoshop is on its 16th version and After Effects is at 13.5 that there remain these incompatibilities.  I mean, they are made by the same company, and sold as part of a suite with the underlying premise being interoperability.  I know there are different teams involved in the development of these applications, but could they maybe, I dunno.. have a bloody meeting now and again to get on the same page?  Is the lack of any real competition in this space brewing complacency?

Pardon the tone, but this is a very frustrating situation... as I see it, this is just unacceptable, and it is affecting my ability to do my job.
