Some things to double-check:

  • Verify that the artwork in the Illustrator document is vector-based and not a raster image placed inside of the Illutrator document.
  • Make sure that the Composition Resolution is at Full and the Magnification is at 100% (if using a hi-dpi display, 200% should also look good).
  • Make sure that the Layer Quality is set to Best.
  •  If scaling the layer above 100% make sure that the Continuously Rasterize switch is enabled.

If the image is still not appearing as expected in After Effects, try placing it in a Photoshop document at the same Canvas Size as the After Effects Composition size. Assuming that works as expected, save the Photoshop document and import that.
